1) Questions and Answers : GPU applications : 2nd GPU of 4870x2 stays in 2d clocks (Message 1104424)

I'm using BOINC 6.12.26, Lunatics ap_5.06_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_ATI_r456 and Lunatics MB_6.10_win_SSE3_ATI_r177.
My 4870x2 is using Catalyst 11.4 and it seems that during the process of a workunit on the 2nd GPU (AP or MB), the clocks stay at 2d mode (500MHz), when the 1st GPU is at 750MHz as it should be.
Both GPUs were found during BOINC Manager startup with same capabilities.
Possibly is a Catalyst fault, but is there any option to force 3D clocks on the 2nd GPU through app_info.xml or cc_config.xml ?

Well, I have installed the ATI AP application (OpenCL version) -Raistmer made, on my 4870x2 and I'm waiting to get lucky and download a AP workunit.
BOINC sees my 4870x2 as 1200GFLOPS peak per GPU.
I'll post back "benchmarks" as soon as I have finish the first AP workunit. :-)

Nice one Raistmer!!!

Let's see now, how lucky are we going to be for getting one Astropulse WU.
Haven't got one since the 8th of June 2009!!! :(

Focus guys, focus.

Pepi, I'm not using my ATI for Seti, yet.
I know about the Hybrid Astropulse of Lunatics, that will be available -I hope soon, as other Lunatics projects have.
I'm just trying to point out that the use of ATI cards (mainly the 4800 series) will have major problems with heat and thus sound, which the user wont be able to live with if there is any kind of general GPU-Crunch switch (On/Off) somewhere in the chain of Drivers-Boinc-Seti-3rd party appl.

I will check the BOINC forums, Claggy thanks.

Returning to the official subject of the thread, I must say that the usage of Seti on an Ati 4870x2 seems very difficult -maybe impossible. Let me write down the whole story.

I found out that even if there is no work to be done on the GPU, the clocks will run in 3D mode 750MHz/900MHz, making the fan to evolve at 4000 rpms. This is even worst if you have your PC close to bed and left it on all night -as always !!! The fan wont let you sleep at all.
The same will happen if there are workunits to be crunched.
So, we have the problem of heat and thus sound, that will make the night a real nightmare :(

What are the possible solutions?
Solution 1: Use an Accelero Xtreme 4870x2 will help (possible GPU failure during installation)
Solution 2: A setting to enable or disable the GPU cruching on demand, whenever you want to, through BOINC Manager. ("Use GPU while computer is in use" is not a fully solution)
Solution 3: Stay at 6.6.41, where ATI wont be found from BOINC Manager

I really want to crunch SETI workunits with my 4870x2, but the extreme heat and generated sound from the GPU fan are big disadvantages here.

Any thoughts or ideas?
I don't thing I'm the only one with these problems. :)

PS. Water-cooling is not an solution for me because of a used-all-slots motherboard.

I meant that the best solution is for ATi's clocks to not run in 3D mode when the GPU is idle (because of no work and/or application is available).
ATi's getting really hot when running on 3D mode and the fan is rotating at 4000+ rpms.
I know that this will happen -normally- when crunching a workunit, but when the GPU is idle, the clocks must be running on 2D mode.

Which is the one who must switch to 2D mode when the GPU is idle?
Catalyst drivers or BOINC application itself?

At last ATI support was added to BOINC officially.

I installed the latest version 6.10.17 and I found out that the GPU was running on 3D mode (judging from its clocks) although there is no work available.
Its OK when crunching, but isn't the use for 3D clocks useless without work to crunch?

Any thoughts?

I.

I do have a 4870x2.
It would be a nice if we could load some Seti workunits (I hope more that 2 at a time) on the "ATI horse" (ati means horse in Greek).
The only thing I'm concerning about is the noise from the fan and the temperature it would give.

I also confirm that I only got AP_v5.03 workunits on 3 machines, which also have the MB section on app_info.xml file. The machines' capability of AP workunits is 12hrs, 25hrs and 51hrs (if it has to do something with processing speed).

I just got 5 AP work units, too.
I am -now- crunching 2 AP work units through my CPU (AMD Dual Core) and 1 setiathome enchanced 6.05 (cuda) through the GPU (SLI configuration).
I haven't make any cc_config.xml file.
The 1 cuda work unit uses at most 10% of one of the cores, usually it is a 4%.

As for the 6.05 cuda computation erros, it has nothing to do with SLi enabled or disabled, neither the drivers version been used. I tried all of the above combinations with 181.00. Its a no go :-(

Well, I tried today to use the modified package for CUDA and I have about 35 WUs with Compute error !!!
At first I though that it was the GPU o/c to blame, but the errors keeping coming also without the o/c.

Some examples:
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1096809308
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1096809307
http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?resultid=1096800160

Using 6.4.5 with 180.48 on two SLi-Enabled 8800GTS cards.

I really don't want to think that "SetiCUDA" was given away without the correct amount of testings.
I also don't know what these Compute errors do to my seti-account. Does this marks me as a "bad-participant" ?

Answer to the first post:
Norton Sonar recognizes the Seti optimized applications (both seti@home and AP) as possible threats, and thus quarantine them.
All you have to do is to Exclude the Boinc folders ('All Users' and 'Program Files' ones) through Norton Internet Security 'Computer'->Settings.

Personal opinion on NIS 2009:
Norton Internet Security 2009 is by far the best firewall/antivirus solution for home PC systems. Its setup needs only 1 minute (try for yourselves), it has the smallest memory footprint (give it a try too), and detects 'n' cleans more virus/trojans than any other product like NOD/Norman/Kasperksy and it updates using the Pulses Technology in intervals of 1-10 minutes.
Please, do not give false directions if you have not try NIS2009 for yourselves.
The best way to build an opinion is to try it yourselves and not read internet or magazines' reviews.
13) Questions and Answers : Web site : Cannot acquire stats through a custom application (Message 788193)

I've made an application which retrieves the stats of my team.
Since some days, I get the message "bad user agent", whenever I'm trying to acquire the stats of my team.

Is there a rule in which only a browser can retrieve the stats? Because using the same url in a browser, the stats are just fine.

Usually, using the
setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/fcgi-bin/fcgi?email=xxx@xxx.xx you can see yours or others Seti-Classic Stats.
I checked yesterday and I saw that this link is going to a 404-page.
Does this means that the Seti-Classic stats will stop updating, or it is just a server maintenance?

Thanks in advance.

Can someone -inside the Project, maybe Ron- tell me that the above is correct?

Thanks but I'm not asking for an application to do that.
Which data from the result file can make out that a workunit is interesting?
