Posted 3 Dec 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: Double sad news... 2020 really is proving itself to be a really bad year for many people and many other "stalwarts" that we have come to depend on. Condolences to the Hatch family...and perhaps a nice, rich entrepreneur might help fund a spanking new telescope at Puerto Rico, once the site has been cleared and made safe. |

(Message 2061782)
Posted 19 Nov 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: The New York Times reports that the observatory will be torn down. My heart is broken. This is indeed a very sad day - I just this news on the BBC website: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-55008567 The observatory provided the first solid evidence for a type of object known as a neutron star. It was also used to identify the first example of a binary pulsar (two magnetised neutron stars orbiting around a common centre of mass), which earned its discoverers the Nobel Prize in Physics. it has been coming though - a lack of funding and no massive interest in repairing the original storm damage back in the summer of 2020 and a subsequent cable breakage just 2 weeks ago, has finally brought it down... Maybe we can get Messrs Musk and/or Bezos to fund a replacement - they seem to have piles of cash :-) regards and stay safe Tim |

As Posted: 1 Apr 2020, 4:17:59 UTC by Eric Korpela here: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=85412&postid=2042179 We will have to replace the RAC>1 requirement with a total credit requirement. We may also have to come up with an endorsement process to allow new users. Well, I got that right :-) Any chance of a job please Eric ? ;-) |

Posted 1 Apr 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: The other thing that I was hoping to make was the 20 year club, but that is not going to happen either. You will probably make it to the 20 year club but not until June next year as the website is going to continue for now. (OK, so you might not have been crunching for all the 20 years - but I'm sure you must have taken little "holidays" during this time when you weren't crunching SETI? ) ;-) I'll reach the 21 year club* in 2 days time - and I still have a cache of tasks that'll just about see me through until then ;-) * I have an early start date due to an admin cock up when we switched from Classic SETI to BOINC SETI. |

Posted 31 Mar 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: Hi all Eric K has responded here: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=85412&postid=2042009 As promised, we've stopped the process that puts new data into the queue today. Data distribution will continue until the files shown on the status pages are done. We'll be accepting results and resending results that didn't validate for a while. So, no new work as from now Resends will still be available (until they run out) Uploads will continue to accepted It's probably the best set of options in the circumstances. :-) So, time to crunch through the caches and hope for some resends ;-) |

SETI@home hibernation
(Message 2041922)
Posted 31 Mar 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: Well people - it's THAT day - a day that was going to happen at some point even if we didn't want it to go away. While it has been a pleasure to be involved for so long it has not been witout it's frustrations too...but most of them were resolved and the project carried on, learning from some of it's mistakes and continuing to make others :-) But we're here now. So, a big thank you to everyone involved for providing us with a useful hobby, and with it's aim of finding ET never quite being achieved (up until now). Hopefully most other distributed computing projects might see an increase in users as SETI crunchers move on to other goals. And with luck, one day this project might re-emerge from hibernation. Best of luck to everyone, thanks for all the tasks and stay safe !! PS: Can everyone else please stop downloading tasks - I'm trying to hit the 10 million mark by the end of today and I can't reach this total, if everyone else is grabbing whatever tasks are available ;-) |

Posted 30 Mar 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: I understand your reasoning, but I've been participating with SETI @ Home since I got my first Mac 5200 back in 1993. (Or was it '94? I don't even remember now.) The screen saver was a comforting old friend over the years. I may be personifying SETI @ Home too much, but I'm going to really miss it. It was the first program of it's sort that I ever ran. The first screensaver ("Classic" S@H came out in 1999 I believe. I remember seeing it running for the first time back then and I was very intrigued and have been running it ever since (on and off, as other projects have also needed some of my computer cycles). |

(Message 2041149)
Posted 28 Mar 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: HI all I think we can all agree that the original "hibernation" message was not specific enough and has left questions to be answered in terms of which parts will stop, which parts will continue (other than the website and this messageboard). "stop distributing work" - all work? only new work? which please? "go into hibernation" - which parts? validator? upload server? download server? (for "old" tasks in the re-send queue) One hopes we will find out very soon...as we really should have been advised in the original message. |

(Message 2041091)
Posted 28 Mar 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: Right now, there are 52 tasks in my queue. Hi I asked the same question here: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=85393 My guess is that they will just stop creating and sending *new* tasks...but those still on peoples computers (hopefully) will be allowed to be uploaded once completed...as just shutting down the upload servers makes no sense at all if people are still crunching the numbers. And those tasks that are in the re-send queue, may still become available so that the pending validation queue can (eventually) be shrunk to zero when the quorum for each task is reached. But that's all my guesswork. So fingers crossed eh? |

Posted 28 Mar 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: Would someone be able to clarify if they have or have not been analyzing anyone of the WUs that we've been crunching? If they haven't been analyzing any of the data why weren't they? I quite agree....what have the admins/researchers/backoffice staff been doing with all the results that have been reported. Some sort of basic analysis must have been done, otherwise, what has this project been for? It would be nice if (at some point soon) someone can give a precise run down on what the project has achieved over the last 20 years (apart from helping to warm peoples rooms, from all the heat generated) and any technical and analysis reports that have been generated. |

Posted 28 Mar 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: Hi all I'm on a last minute mission to reach 10m Currently 8,599,883 and with (maybe) less than 4 days to go. Just a shame that there are not too many tasks available...some of my hosts have no tasks in their caches...so some backup projects are being crunched when they could be processing SAH tasks...which is limiting my chances. Oh well...it's just a statistic...not like it means a lot ;-) |

Indeed...but as long as they don't shutdown the upload servers, I'm aiming to have a cache of SAH tasks available that I can still crunch on 3rd April 2020...and send the completed tasks back for validation... lol I believe that this website and this messageboard will remain open after 31st March. |

Posted 27 Mar 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: It would be nice, but no announcement yet. Anything you read on this board is speculation and wishful thinking. Quite understand. Just asking the question with the hope that an admin can answer as I think all active members would be interested to know. Personally, I would hope that they would just stop issuing "new" tasks and that any that remain are in the system will continue to be available until thay are all returned successfully at least twice - which will mean that every issued task will be validated and credited. And those that are either aborted or past their deadline will continue to be re-issued...and eventually none will be left. The alternative would be that they just shut down the server and that's it. We'll all find out next Wednesday. Or maybe not. It just depends on if someone makes an announcement and when. |

(Message 2040830)
Posted 27 Mar 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: Hi all So does anyone know what will happen after 31st March, once SETI@home stops issuing tasks? WIll it be a "slow" shutdown so that any tasks that are still "pending" validation will still be available to download and become validated later on? Or will it be a "fast" shutdown and any pending tasks will never be validated as any further downloading of these tasks will never happen? I ask as I have over 4,600 "pending tasks" and it would be nice to think that all of these will eventually be validated by "wingmen" - but if some tasks are aborted or are never completed, then some "pending" tasks may never returned and be credited. And it would be nice to know in advance what the plan is? |

(Message 2035404)
Posted 3 Mar 2020 by UBT - Timbo Post: Hi all I'm another of the "joined in 1999" club, as I first spied the original SETI@home "screensaver" program, out in the open, at a computer fair, in Melbourne, FLA in 1999. When I got back to the UK, I downloaded the program and started crunching, in the days of dial-up. I'm a bit surprised that the Nebula project is going to start...and that analysis of 20+ years of crunching is going to be undertaken - as I thought that was being done "behind the scenes" after our completed and validated work units had been uploaded. Maybe some analysis was being done, but only pretty minor stuff? In the meantime, it's a great shame that more radio telescopes had not been introduced to the "Breakthrough Listen" project - as Arecibo could only ever monitor a very small percentage of the sky and so it was always a possibility that we were looking in the wrong direction. In the meantime, thanks to David A, Rom W, Eric K and all ther other staff (past and present) for all their efforts. |
