i just laugh at ppl thinking that any software, especially free ones is hard to use or let alone can't figure out how to use it in the right way.. But then I'm a geek, so maybe these 2 guys aren't at all mac geeks.. BOINC to you 2 ppl is way better then just SETI@Home of the late 90's way why, cause there are other projects using boinc, that you can also join when SETI is having problems hence its alot more efficient. Just my 2 Cents.

The Mac Mini is a tightly packed little box of Apple goodness. I've long suspected that it shares the same potential problems that lappie owners face - i.e. the cooling solution is just about adequate for normal running, but not the continuous load that SETI imposes.

While it is true that minis use laptop-grade silicon and drives, this does not apply to its cooling system: it's way more beefy than anything you'd ever find in a laptop. The G4 minis have employed a very similar cooling system, and I've had G4 minis run on SETI more or less since the day they were introduced - again without any hiccups to date.

OK, Well received all information. Do everything necessary for cooling.
Thanks for your help

You could also use Fan Control which is a System Prefs pane, which would add it to the "Other" for the Prefs pane, you can download it here http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/23137

I don't see why not. Any connection to a government listed team as far as I am concerned is ok so long as you don't control the massive computers that do work for the government. But then is it OK to use government equipment to have an edge over another team? I think not.

Just my opinion.

I dont work for the gov at all lol...

Ok. Trying to help, but I guess I don't understand the root of your remaining concern. There is certainly nothing wrong w/ running stock 5.28 from Berkeley.
V8 is substantially quicker however and is quite a different animal under the hood. Run em' both, compare & decide from there.

Cheers!

Well I was just wondering if the 5.28 was far improved agianst the 5.27 V8 Optimised one that Kahn made, and as you said it isnt and I agree.. what I am now am gonna do is is not reqest anymore work and let 5.28 finish all the rest of the Units i have on here, then go back to v8.... which my G4 is still using.. lol

The short answer to your question is "yes". Berkeley's current releases contain many "improvements" for specific optimizations that use SIMD instructions.

I just realized i saw the SSE and SSE2 but what about SSE3??? I used to use Alex kahns Workers loved those, until I realized, Berkeley has a new version up so I just wanted to try, and may stick with it...

Alex still makes them & has released new optimized applications which are the quickest yet. See this thread: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=31810&nowrap=true#656269

You will find both Core 2 and G4 aps.

Have fun!

Yes I know, but those are version 5.27, not 5.28 like here, and I use Intel Core Duo, not the core 2 one tho on my MBP, but I think Im gonna stick with the 5.28 for now, since i really dont see any difference between the 2, except the way Alex Kahns reports it back to seti@home so.. i dont know.. we'll see how my RAC goes for a few weeks I guess..

Sorry for confusion re: Core 2. Didn't realize you had Core Duo, but you no doubt saw the link w/ core Duo ap.
As for version #, 5.28 is the current OSX MB version w/ revised credit multi of 2.85

Alex's V8 is also MB w/ the credit multi revised to 2.85. It does the the same science as stock Berkeley 5.28, correctly &......MUCH faster.

Your choice.

You can also edit the app_info.xml file w/ V8 to look like the following.
This will then report as 5.28

<app_info>
<app>
<name>setiathome_enhanced</name>
</app>
<file_info>
<name>seti_enhanced-i386-v8-core2-nographics</name>
<executable/>
</file_info>
<app_version>
<app_name>setiathome_enhanced</app_name>
<version_num>527</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>seti_enhanced-i386-v8-core2-nographics</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
<app_version>
<app_name>setiathome_enhanced</app_name>
<version_num>528</version_num>
<file_ref>
<file_name>seti_enhanced-i386-v8-core2-nographics</file_name>
<main_program/>
</file_ref>
</app_version>
</app_info>

Can anyone here tell me if the regular SETI apps here for mac that SETI@Home @ berkeley makes, is Optimized in any way, to use SSE or SSE2 or SSE3? cause i dont see any indication of it in the stderr.txt file this is what i see.. thanks

*edit* also i forgot to Mention if at all if AltiVec is used for the G4's and G5 as well in these "normal apps", but i have an intel mac so thats why im just curious..

No, I do not believe this would at all be possible since the latest version of boinc uses at least for OS X and possible other UNIX OS's boinc supports, use's a security measure, this is true I believe to version of boinc 5.8 to the latest one currently, 5.10.20, but with the GUI version of boinc, it does not allow ya to install it where you want, but there is a CLI (Command Line Interface) something that you would run on the Terminal, that would be possible to run on a USB stick.. but im not sure, look for 5.4.9 Older version (Unix command-line version) @ http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php ..

20) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Scheduler Request problem. (Message 573386)
Posted 22 May 2007 by Profile toffuuu
Post:
Just Quit the boinc manager and re-open it??

My G5 Mac has three S@hBeta results it’s been trying to report for several days now, and in the course of implementing the anonymous-platform workaround here I’ve restarted BOINC a few times. Its most recent log:
Mon 21 May 18:29:18 2007|SETI@home Beta Test|Sending scheduler request to http://setiboinc.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta_cgi/cgi
Mon 21 May 18:29:18 2007|SETI@home Beta Test|Reason: To report completed tasks
Mon 21 May 18:29:18 2007|SETI@home Beta Test|Reporting 3 tasks
Mon 21 May 18:29:28 2007|SETI@home Beta Test|Scheduler request failed: HTTP internal server error
Mon 21 May 18:29:28 2007|SETI@home Beta Test|Deferring scheduler requests for 1 hours, 54 minutes and 3 seconds

So it’s certainly worth a try, but it’s by no means guaranteed to succeed.

I used to use the anonymous platform thing, and days ago since i kept getting that http internal server error, i get Ghost WU's, so I just decided to detach and use the Official boinc version of SETI and it worked then now this prob, i did quit boinc manager for as long has the comminication was deferred for, and when I relaunched it, it then worked... so something got reset when i quit it at least...
