1) Questions and Answers : GPU applications : Massive reduction in GPU processing speed - help needed (Message 1789341)

This may be a silly question, but does more work get done by processing 2-3 work units on the GPU at once as opposed to just one at a time? If its the same then its probably simpler and more efficient just to leave it doing one at a time...

Good Morning,

Wanted to get some opinions...

I'm looking to upgrade my Dual Xeon server. Currently I have a pair of Nvidia GT640s in there which are doing a fairly good job. I'm looking to swap these out for faster cards, and given that the new Nvidia cards are on the horizon (GTX 1080/GTX 1070) I'm considering my options. Which would you choose out of:

Option1:
-Get a pair of Used Nvidia GTX 980s (not TI) - roughly 9.2 Terraflops

Option 2:
-Keep one of the Nvidia GT 640s and get one Nvidia 1070 - roughly 7 Terraflops

The slots on my motherboard are Dual PCI 2.0 (one 8x, one 4x) but for the purposes of workunits, I don't believe that the slot speed really matters too much considering all it does is copy the work unit to the GPU memory and work on it from there.

I have a 750W PSU which is up to the task of driving two GPUs - Ideally I don't want to spend more than £270 Max, so I'm kind of banking on the cost of the 980 falling when the new 1070/1080 comes out (Happy to buy used if they are still under warranty).

Good evening all,

Has there been any news or updates on the status of Linux Nvidia GPU applications for Seti@Home yet? I've been crunching Asteroids@Home in the meantime, but am looking to come back properly as soon as GPU WUs are available again...

4) Questions and Answers : GPU applications : Which video card is the best for seti (Message 1770633)

Hi,

The "Best" card in this instance is going to be the highest spec card you can get for your budget. Before you jump in and buy the quaddro, shop around and see what other cards you can get in the same price range. Ideally you want the highest clock speed, and most stream processors (CUDA cores). Memory isn't so important for SETI as long as you have at least 512MB. I'm going to assume you have chosen Nvidia over ATI in this instance. A few things to take into account:

1. You'll get a higher spec card for the price going for a GeForce rather than a quaddro, simply because the quaddros are aimed at the professional/autocad part of the market and are more specialised. This specialism isn't required for SETI.

2. Make sure the card supports CUDA..some of the older cards do not support it.

3. Before selecting your final card for purchase - compare the specs of it on here against other cards in the same price range.

Hope that helps a bit at least!

Many thanks for the response. I didn't realise that the work units were the same for CPU and GPU. I always assumed that they had been compiled differently (CUDA vs X86 architectures). I suppose it makes more sense having the applications different but the work the same.

Ah well. I guess in the meantime I'll put the GPUs to use for another project until the SETI GPU apps are available.

Good evening,

I've noticed over the past few weeks that the number of GPU tasks has fallen, to the point where I've now had three days without any GPU work units. Is there a problem with the creation of tasks at the moment for GPUs?

In my Event log, the errors I am seeing are:

"No tasks are available for SETI@home v7"
"No tasks are available for AstroPulse v7"
"No tasks are available to SETI@home v8".

I'm running Ubuntu Linux with three GPUS;

2 x Nvidia 640
1 x Nvidia 460

I haven't installed any applications (e.g. lunatics) I'm just using stock BOINC with the apps that are automatically installed by the client.

I'd also like to add I've had no problem with CPU WUs - these are still crunching away as I speak.

regards

-Andrew
