India has now set the bar high reporting 90,600 new cases and officially passing 70,000 deaths (unofficially likely several times higher than that) which contributed great to the world passing 27 million cases and 883,000 deaths without the help of those countries that don't report over weekends and public holidays. :-O

Ethiopia has taken Singapore out of 49th place while Nepal has jumped into 56th spot passing both Armenia and Ghana.

Meanwhile down under today (that's tomorrow for some of you) our state of Victoria has now recorded 666 deaths and I hope that that is not an omen. :-O

Yes Here in Sweden most people die on a Wednesday of Covid-19. Not in weekends and public holidays...

For a good change for the COVID19 story, here are some spectacular and positive results:

(Note: The full articles are very much NOT for the squeamish to read!)

A Supercomputer Analyzed Covid-19 - and an Interesting New Theory Has Emerged
wrote:
A closer look at the Bradykinin hypothesis...

Summit supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Lab ... 40,000 genes from 17,000 genetic samples ... the second-fastest computer in the world [and 13MWatts power] ... involved analyzing 2.5 billion genetic combinations [and] took more than a week.

... The computer had revealed a new theory about how Covid-19 impacts the body: the bradykinin hypothesis. The hypothesis provides a model that explains many aspects of Covid-19, including some of its most bizarre symptoms. It also suggests 10-plus potential treatments, many of which are already FDA approved...

... According to the team’s findings, a Covid-19 infection generally begins when the virus enters the body through ACE2 receptors in the nose, (The receptors, which the virus is known to target, are abundant there.) The virus then proceeds through the body, entering cells in other places where ACE2 is also present: the intestines, kidneys, and heart. This likely accounts for at least some of the disease’s cardiac and GI symptoms...

... Covid-19 isn’t content to simply infect cells that already express lots of ACE2 receptors. Instead, it actively hijacks the body’s own systems, tricking it into upregulating ACE2 receptors in places where they’re usually expressed at low or medium levels, including the lungs...

... The renin–angiotensin system (RAS) controls many aspects of the circulatory system, including the body’s levels of a chemical called bradykinin, which normally helps to regulate blood pressure...

The end result, the researchers say, is to release a bradykinin storm — a massive, runaway buildup of bradykinin in the body...

... “the pathology of Covid-19 is likely the result of Bradykinin Storms rather than cytokine storms,” which had been previously identified in Covid-19 patients, but that “the two may be intricately linked.”...

... And Covid-19 has another especially insidious trick ... When it combines with fluid leaking into the lungs, the results are disastrous: It forms a hydrogel, which can fill the lungs in some patients...

... His team’s finding won’t cure Covid-19. But if the treatments it points to pan out in the clinic, interventions guided by the bradykinin hypothesis could greatly reduce patients’ suffering — and potentially save lives.

The source paper is:

A mechanistic model and therapeutic interventions for COVID-19 involving a RAS-mediated bradykinin storm

Note: Those articles are very much NOT for the squeamish to read!

That is a fantastic piece of work to connect all those bits together: All of the computer, data, genetic, and physiological bits!

The question as always is that of funding and how soon?...

Why does it take a pandemic to come to appreciate Science and Scientists?...

Meanwhile, no surprise that the low paid and no-job-security and no-health-security go to work regardless of being ill:

Workplace transmissions: a predictable result of the class divide in worker rights

How to stop sick people going to work? ... about 80% of new COVID-19 infections in the state's second-wave outbreak were from workplace transmissions...

The failure to anticipate this problem is one of the greatest flaws in Australia's response to the pandemic.

The belated payments are a tacit acknowledgement of a systemic problem. It is one that needs more than a temporary band-aid.

For a society that prides itself on egalitarianism, the mounting evidence [is] that vulnerable workers have borne the brunt of health and financial impacts...

That's no way to run any fair and freedoms loving country...

That is also a very expensive failure for subsequently suffering the consequences for all.

While at lot of countries have their usually low Saturday numbers reported in the last period India has done it again registering another record breaking 91,723 new cases (will we see the 100,000 mark broken?) and even if Brazil put in their usual daily numbers for the last reporting period they wouldn't have stood a chance at hanging onto 2nd spot as India rolled right over them as they passed 4.2 million reported cases. :-O

France leapt well into 15th and now have Bangladesh in their sights for tomorrow (the U.K. will then be next and even though they are accelerating again France just has too much momentum behind them to be held off) while the Ukraine has taken 24th place from Canada who is now in Israel's sights. Bolivia has claimed 27th from Qatar while the Netherlands has taken 41st from the U.A.E. and Morocco has slipped into 44th spot, displacing Japan, and is now threatening Belarus.

We'll get some Sunday numbers in this current reporting period as well as catch up numbers from those countries that don't report over weekends (unless there's a public holiday involved that is), but it's the next reporting period after that 1 that could be a real shocker (I hope that I'm wrong).

A further 2,988 cases of coronavirus were reported in the UK in the 24 hours to Sunday, government data showed - the highest number reported on a single day since 22 May.
It represents more than 50% increase from a day earlier, according to the UK government's coronavirus dashboard.
UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he was "concerned" about a rise in cases "predominantly among young people".
This from the mupprt that a short time ago said: Schools have been closed for long enough, we cannot risk the education of children.

Maybe there's some hope for next year.

Coronavirus vaccine: Australia reaches deal to secure priority access.

Why so many doses some may ask?
What is not mentioned in the article is that 2 doses per person maybe required and we'll also be supplying our pacific neighbours well (no big pharmaceutical companies are going to rip this end of the world off this time).

Here's an updated reminder for what not to suffer:

(UK Government Guidance published 7 September 2020) COVID-19: long-term health effects
wrote:
Around 10% of mild coronovirus (COVID-19) cases who were not admitted to hospital have reported symptoms lasting more than 4 weeks.

A number of hospitalised cases reported continuing symptoms for 8 or more weeks following discharge.

Persistent health problems reported following acute COVID-19 disease include:

  • respiratory symptoms and conditions such as chronic cough, shortness of breath, lung inflammation and fibrosis, and pulmonary vascular disease
  • cardiovascular symptoms and disease such as chest tightness, acute myocarditis and heart failure
  • protracted loss or change of smell and taste
  • mental health problems including depression, anxiety and cognitive difficulties
  • inflammatory disorders such as myalgia, multisystem inflammatory syndrome, Guillain-Barre syndrome, or neuralgic amyotrophy
  • gastrointestinal disturbance with diarrhoea
  • continuing headaches
  • fatigue, weakness and sleeplessness
  • liver and kidney dysfunction
  • clotting disorders and thrombosis
  • lymphadenopathy
  • skin rashes

That unwholesome list is not to be taken lightly...

Since my last update the world has passed 27.7 million cases and 900,000 deaths. :-(

The U.S. has now passed 6.5 million cases (though I still have to wonder how many cases are slipping through with Trump's new testing rules that you must show symptoms to get tested), but the real elephant in the room (at their current rate) will take over #1 spot from the U.S. sometime next month (with over a billion more people than the U.S. India certainly has the weight to do it). :-O

Argentina has become the 10th country to pass 500,000 cases as they continue to chase Spain down while Indonesia became the 23rd to pass 200,000 cases and the Dominican Republic became the 32nd to pass 100,000.

Morocco removed the U.A.E. from 42nd place while Ethiopia became to 49th country to pass 60,000 cases and will likely kick Portugal out of 48th place tomorrow meanwhile El Salvador knocked Australia out of 70th spot and then they got knocked out of it by Palestine, but there will be many more ups and downs to happen yet as the race continues.

The law's the law right?
New law in effect from next Monday
Social gatherings of more than six people in England will not be allowed in law from Monday 14 September
The new rule applies to people in private homes, indoors and outdoors, and places such as pubs, restaurants, cafes and public outdoor spaces
It applies to all ages
The rule does not apply to schools and workplaces, or weddings, funerals and organised team sports
A full list of exemptions is due to be published before the law changes
People who ignore police could be fined £100 - doubling with each offence to a maximum of £3,200
Thank goodness, this wasn't around decades ago, my family would have been in serious trouble - a family of 10.
Can't happen, won't happen?
REALLY?

The law's the law Right?
Edited to remove question marks (bullet points which showed up on the post preview).
"Super simple" rules says Hancock.

At the end of the last reporting period the world passed 28 million cases, the U.S. passed 195,000 deaths and India set another record breaking daily case number of 95,529 while officially passing 75,000 deaths. :-O

Peru has become the 5th country to pass 700,000 cases (Colombia will be next) while Mexico has removed South Africa from 7th place as Spain and Argentina race to see who's next and France is still closing in fast on the U.K..

Morocco has passed the Netherlands to take 41st place, Ethiopia passed Portugal for 49th while Bahrain has taken 50th from Singapore, Uzbekistan has taken 60th place from Kyrgyzstan, Austria passed Ireland to take 67th and then Czechia passed them both as Lebanon has robbed South Korea of 75th spot.

But never fear, there are still many more moves to happen yet.

Even though a few figures have still to come in for the last reporting period the world has recorded a record breaking 302,593 daily case count while passing 913,000 deaths and India has set a new record of 96,760 new cases while blasting past 4.5 million cases. :-O

Meanwhile Venezuela has overtaken Singapore to take 51st spot while Uzbekistan has provisionally taken 58th place, but Ghana has yet to enter their numbers yet, and Czechia has taken 66th spot from Serbia.

On the death list Argentina has taken 15th spot from Ecuador while Bangladesh bumped China out of 28th place and the Philippines took 31st spot from Romania.

Stay tuned for more updates.

Sept 11 saw a new world daily case record of 310,676 set taking the total past 28.6 million with over 919,000 deaths. Currently the numbers stand at just over 28.9 million with over 923,000 deaths. :-(

Meanwhile France has rolled straight over the U.K. taking 13th place and are now eyeing Iran's position off, Pakistan became the 17th country to pass 300,000 cases while Iraq knocked Italy out of 19th spot and the Philippines are now positioned to remove Germany from 21st place.

Israel moved past the Ukraine to take 24th spot while Romania became the 33rd country to pass 100,000 cases and displaced Egypt from 32nd place at the same time, then Panama became the 34th to pass the 100,000 mark. Uzbekistan has taken 57th spot from Switzerland and Austria moved past Serbia into 67th place while Lebanon has removed Bosnia and Herzegovina from 74th spot and Libya passed South Korea to take over 76th place.

Paraguay is the only remaining country of interest for this reporting period as their numbers when they come in will likely take Australia out of 72nd place as well as El Salvador from 71st.

Other than that India just keeps on posting 90K+ days (will we see a 100K+ day?) and has already got an over 400,000 case lead over Brazil since taking 2nd spot from them while also cutting the U.S.'s lead down to under 2 million and going on current numbers should be within striking distance of the U.S. in around 30-33 days time. :-O

Trump has an ace up his sleeve, people will be spending more time indoors as fall approaches. He still thinks America will be first.

That explains the fall in value of coal mining companies and the number of auto manufacturing plants in Michigan, I presume.

Now that most of the weekend's figures are in the world had passed 29.4 cases and over 932,400 deaths in the last reporting period while the U.S. has racked up 199,000 death and India passes 4.9 million cases with over 80,000 deaths (officially).

Iran became the 12th country to pass 400,000 deaths, Iraq has passed Turkey to takeover 19th while the Philippines displace Germany from 21st, Romania took 32nd place from the Dominican Republic and we're still waiting for Sweden's numbers (is there a public holiday going on there?) to be sure that Morocco has taken 38th spot from them.

Things have livened up in the Netherlands with them retaking 41st spot back from Guatemala while Venezuela has claimed 50th from Bahrain, Costa Rica has moved past Nigeria into 54th and Czechia has moved into 65th spot past Kenya (if 1 could believe Kenya's numbers) while Palestine knocked Ireland out of 69th.

Meanwhile Spain's reporting problems are still ongoing so expected more historical adjustments from them.
