The world has now passed 25.9 million cases and 861,000 deaths while the U.S. (1st) and Brazil (2nd) continue to see who can out do the other on their daily numbers (usually 1 will come in higher on 1 count while the other does the same with the other) meanwhile India (3rd) just keeps on throwing in the big numbers and is now well within 200,000 cases of Brazil. :-O

Russia has become the 4th country to pass 1 million report cases while Mexico becomes the 8th to register 600,000.

South Africa (6th) is running out of puff and will be passed by Colombia in the next set of numbers, Saudi Arabia (14th) is also running out of fuel and could possibly fall to Bangladesh at the same time while Israel has taken 27th place from Bolivia and Kuwait replaces Belgium for 36th and is now positioned at Oman's backdoor.

But there's still a lot more action coming up as a lot of gaps continue to get closed. :-(

When reality hits home after organising an anti-lockdown protest on FB.

Ballarat woman live-streams arrest for allegedly inciting coronavirus lockdown protest on Facebook.

When you live in a state that has enough problems already (drought, then bushfires followed by COVID and then a COVID explosion) the last thing that you should be doing is trying to make matters possibly worse and then thinking that deleting the post will get you out of trouble just goes to show how really stupid some people can get. :-(

Suspect the concentration is related to population density.

Well Brazil (2nd) has passed 4 million reported cases while India has set a new world daily record of 82,860 cases and at their current rate will pass Brazil's case count in about 5 days. :-O

Colombia breezed past South Africa and into 6th place while Bangladesh has claimed 14th spot from Saudi Arabia and France's big comeback has them now within striking distance of Pakistan's 16th place (though I'd take Pakistan's numbers as a big under estimation anyway) meanwhile some countries are now blazing along while others are starting to fight back to hold their positions, but the only certain thing is that the great COVID race will continue on and only good or bad decisions will tell in the end.

Does this count tally have a purpose and will it only end when everyone is dead?

Your first question has many answers, including it serves to remind us that our governments and fellow citizens can be very stupid, callous and don't (want to) obey rules; that scientists still don't fully understand how the virus acts, how it spreads, how to cure it and how to prevent it.
As to your second question - hopefully humans will have either developed immunity or a cure before the last one of us dies from Covid-19.

Watching the localised tussle between France & the UK.
For some time France was a lot lower down the table of shame than the UK, both have shown an increase in eagerness, and are climbing gradually. France is jumping into gear and is now about 10k behind the UK, and is closing that gap at about 8k per day.
The there's Bangladesh - they are closing on both, but at a fairly low rate - I guess that by the time they get into contention France will be comfortably ahead of the UK.

A comment about the role of government agencies in the collection of the raw data. Some countries have a very good raw data feeds and report these figures without filtering, and so their figures are "good"; others have a very poor raw data feed and know the data collected is incomplete and report the figures they have, their data is "not so good"; some countries collect the raw data and massage it to suit their political ends, their data is "poor"; other countries don't collect the raw data that is available to them, their data is "dangerous". In the case of the "dangerous" countries, if they have a very real high infection rate then how does the rest of the world know if they can allow a people to travel to/from/via a "dangerous" country? and could that dangerous country act as a "mega super spreader" at some time in the future?

There will be more than enough survivors to carry on Bob so don't get pessimistic as you can take many precautions and as we learn to understand it we can take even better precautions until a vaccine is available (listen to the verified experts and not the idiots).

As to the count it's a way to gauge countries' reaction to this pandemic as well as how good their heath and government systems are and work (or don't). In many countries from the Middle East down through Africa and eastward across SW Asia to SE Asia don't have the government health infrastructure necessary to start with, due to many reasons, and as such many get sick at home, die at home and due to religious practices are either cremated or buried by the immediate family well within 24hrs without their governments even knowing what happened (and that's if they have any sort of government that extends past the boundaries of their major cities).

A lot can be worked if you use all the parameters available here, https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries, as well as knowing the local conditions that other countries have or have to endure (some are so poor and/or war torn that only high ranking officials and their immediate families get tested), but experts reckon that their case counts could be as much as 3 to 6 times higher than reported and deaths 6 times to at least 10 times (or more).

Countries/States who's leaders called it a hoax or nothing more than a bad flu and did little at the start (or at all) havn't helped matters either and those who are opening up far too soon (because it looks bad for their books) are another big problem when they havn't got things under control at all and then things explode again which means that they have to shutdown again (how many of these will turn into yo-yos?). Then there are those who fudge their numbers to try and make themselves look better than they really are.

The attitudes of some individuals that think that they have the right to break restrictions/laws and possibly infecting many others while doing their stupid irresponsible crap are another big problem also.

Unfortunately, this is all a good reminder that we have a pandemic, a pandemic that is here and now and real, and more people are dying than are typically killed in war.

Meanwhile, really?! The pandemic is over?!! (Not that is...)

Or your life??

India looks to hit 4 million cases in the next reporting period while France has passed Pakistan and became the 16th country to pass 300,000 cases. Iraq (21st) is now ready to put a move on Germany while Ethiopia has taken 50th from Nigeria (though both these countries official counts are likely no where near reality) and Costa Rica blazes into 56th as Nepal takes 60th.

Meanwhile Czechia has taken 69th spot from Australia and our state of Victoria has added another 59 deaths to their count, but like the previously posted 41 death count it has been the feds feeding late nursing home deaths into their numbers and that now takes Victoria's death count past 600. Nursing homes are under federal control here and not the states, but Victoria has taken over control of several nursing homes of late due to the substandard conditions in them.

But there are several other hot pursuits in progress and a few tight races in action to keep an eye on.

Well the world set a new daily case count record in the last reporting period of just over 299,200 taking the total to just over 26,783,500 cases while deaths rose to over 878,000. India also set another daily case count record with 87,115 new cases for the last reporting period and that gets them to within 71,000 of Brazil's count while becoming the 3rd country to officially pass 4 million cases.

On that same day that India passes Brazil, France should take Saudi Arabia out of 15th place meanwhile Belgium has knock Oman out of 36th spot, Japan has become the 44th country to pass 70,000 cases and Venezuela became 53rd country to pass 50,000 cases. Costa Rica has moved past Ghana to take 55th place while Nepal jumps up to 58th place.

Stay tuned for more updates on the great COVID race.

The USA has now registered 580 deaths per one million inhabitants and thus bypasses Sweden with the equivalent of 577...
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
Peru, Belgium, Spain, the UK, Chile, Brazil and Italy have so far had more deaths per capita than the US and Sweden. San Marino and Andorra also have a higher proportion of deaths but also have a very small population compared to the other countries mentioned.

Oh where do they breed these idiots? :-(

Mostly south of the Mason Dixon line.

You are forgetiiing the Sturgis S.D. motorcycle rally and I'd bet that most of them never heard of the Mason Dixon line.

As predicted:

South Dakota is nation's top hot spot for COVID-19; 2,143 test positive in last week

South Dakota surpassed 3,000 active COVID-19 cases Thursday while becoming the state with the highest per capita surge in the nation, according to nationwide tracking by the New York Times. Iowa and North Dakota follow the state in hot spot rankings.

In the past seven days, 2,143 South Dakotans have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Department of Health.
...
Contact tracing

118 South Dakotans have COVID-19 as a result of attending the Sturgis motorcycle rally, the DOH reported Thursday.

Clayton said the state is basing its rally tally on South Dakota residents who in 14 days prior to their illness onset visited Sturgis or attended an event that would be considered part of the motorcycle rally prior to their illness.

Those 118 are the ones where it could be firmly established that infection was as a result of attendance. This is probably only a small fraction of the total. It was estimated that 65% of counties in the lower 48 are home to someone who attended Sturgis.
