There's a huge difference between setting up your own "local cloud" backup, or live, storage area compared with farming out to one of the Amazon/Google/Microsoft locations.......

edit to add:
I've just looked up the cost using Amazon Drive = £80 per year per TB. So that's £640 for my current storage - I can buy a lot of disks for that, even allowing for the off-site back-up location I use for the monthly off-site "mirror".

That all depends.....
If he is only claiming to have lost the $millions, then there is no gain.
If he "bought" them at a lower price, then he owes tax on the gain - thus the panic to find the drive and the password since he doesn't have enough money elsewhere to pay the tax due (or at least that's how it would work in the UK)
If the mining were considered "gambling", then in the UK it would depend on if he paid tax on the bet vs. paying tax on the winnings....

Whatever I'm fairly certain the tax man is keeping a very close eye out for developments in this story. Remember the taxman is always after his slice :-(

Surely for such an organisation to have this happen, makes one wonder about their backup implantation - if any.
"We will absolutely provide updates once we know what has happened in terms of retrieving data. This will take time because it is a coding error."
The Home Office previously said that the faulty script was introduced in November 2020, but it did not run until earlier this month when the error within it immediately became apparent.

Here are a few settings all Android (mobile phones and other mobile devices) users should know about:

9 Android Settings You Need To Turn Off Now
wrote:
... These 9 simple #tips? will help you save battery life by taking the load off of your Android phone's processor, and help protect your personal privacy.

We recorded this video using a #Samsung? #Galaxy? #S10? running Android 10. If you have a different phone, or if your Android is running a different version of the OS, the Settings app may look slightly different, but these tips will still work!

0:49? Turn Off Nearby Device Scanning
1:09? Choose Which Apps Can Run In The Background
2:42? Turn Off Usage And Diagnostic Information
3:13? Turn Off Ad Personalization
4:17? Turn Off Improve Accuracy
4:43? Turn Off Google Location History
5:09? Turn Off Network Data Analytics
5:34? Restrict Background Data For Specific Apps
6:22? Turn Off Install Unknown Apps

Have you been enslaved by, and are you slave to, the benefit of Google?

Hopefully those 9 tips will be a helpful eye-opener and something good for saving some of your battery and some of your data!

ROFPMSL.
One really couldn't make this up if they tried.
At some stores, customers queuing outside were warned on Monday evening that transactions had to be "cash-only" due to the ongoing issue.
In light of what has already been said due to covid, cash only please.

It seems the Microsoft programmers have their knickers in a twist.
Nice loop...

...& now trying for a 3rd installation.
Someone should inform them that it will soon be February 2021.

Now it seems they're going for a 4th attempt.

No chance, just hid them.
They didn't like that so now trying to install KB890830 v5.84.

The president of cyber security firm Volexity, which discovered the attack, told Krebs that “if you’re running Exchange and you haven’t patched this yet, there’s a very high chance that your organization is already compromised.”

https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-politics-europe-eastern-europe-new-zealand-f318ba1ffc971eb17371456b015206a5
Nimble, highly skilled criminal hackers believed to operate out of Eastern Europe hacked dozens of companies and government agencies on at least four continents by breaking into a single product they all used.

The victims include New Zealand’s central bank, Harvard Business School, Australia’s securities regulator, the high-powered U.S. law firm Jones Day — whose clients include former President Donald Trump — the rail freight company CSX and the Kroger supermarket and pharmacy chain. Also hit was Washington state’s auditor’s office, where the personal data of up to 1.3 million people gathered for an investigation into unemployment fraud was potentially exposed.

The two-stage mega-hack in December and January of a popular file-transfer program from the Silicon Valley company Accellion highlights a threat that security experts fear may be getting out of hand: intrusions by top-flight criminal and state-backed hackers into software supply chains and third-party services.

I've often mentioned the MK1 computer.
As time passes, continue to see failure to use it.
Case in point: lengthy text message received this afternoon from my medical centre.
"Dear Sirius
We would like to update your medical record.
Do you smoke?
Text SMOKE, EX or NEVER.
It then gives a link to assist in giving it up".

Been a smoker for half a century & it is already on my record.
All I can see are people that know how to use a computer but sadly not their brain.

MK1, we need to get people to quit. Send a message out to every smoker and ask them if they have quit or want help quitting.

Ok, so you're addicted!

... Staying tech: Go vape?

If a certain super-compulsive friend of mine can 'geek' out on vaping, there is hope that anyone can upgrade!

Talk about a Blue Monday: OVH outlines recovery plan as French data centres smoulder
