When I read about the many problems I become thoughtful.
It somehow reads everything like in the 90s, in the beginning.

You got a lot of money. There should be something left for stability and better data management. It is also incomprehensible to me how every Tuesday the service can fail and maintenance is operated? Surely you have a lot of data, but we are writing the year 2017.
Imagine, google does it every Wednesday, you can not search because there's maintenance going on. :-) ... And Google has, I think, much more data.

This is not meant to be evil.

That was a few thoughts ... Greetings Schmeily

You got a lot of money.

No they didn't.
You're thinking of a different project, not Seti@home.

It is also incomprehensible to me how every Tuesday the service can fail and maintenance is operated?

It doesn't fail (usually). It is shut down so maintenance can be done.

Imagine, google does it every Wednesday, you can not search because there's maintenance going on. :-) ... And Google has, I think, much more data.

And it has 10s of thousands of employee's, and billions of Dollars.
Seti has Eric, and a few thousand dollars.

...and Google has multiple redundant servers, in mirrored arrays so can do continuous back-up and maintenance. SETI has one group of servers, which are not mirrored, and thus to do a backup or maintenance you need to stop users accessing the system during those activities.

Einstein for example has mirrored servers in many places and the money to support that, Seti hasn't. But something has changed. 5 years ago we never had all day outages just a couple of hours. Why the change?

I would suggest that there must be a way to keep the web pages up and running during the PLANNED Tuesday outages. If that could be done, a lot of criticism would go away.

Methinks the size of the data base is a major factor.

The forums are directly tied to the database for user accounts, posting history, credit statistics, history of results, and I'm sure other things.

Not so much the absolute raw size of the database (they can keep that under control, from week to week), but the greater fragmentation of both data and indexes because of the much higher turnover of tasks due to newer volunteer hardware.

Couldn't SSDs address that as I understand it fragmentation is not a problem with them?

Richard isn't talking about filesystem fragmentation, which SSDs don't suffer performance losses as much (but filesystem fragmentation still happens on SSDs). Informix is a SQL database and fragmentation of any database is the bane of any DB Admin. It often requires constant massaging and manipulation to keep running at peak performance.

Hi

I have just noticed no new tasks are coming down and the splitters are off again on the status page, but havent seen any posts to say they would be off line as any planned works etc.

Thanks

As it was a Sunday a remote log in was tried to cure the problem but unfortunately that did not work so it will be looked when the staff get in today. In a couple of hours.

As I'm already running out of GPU-WUs, while the BOINC client is set to 2 days - how many days do I have to set to actually get a whole day of WUs?

What I'm saying: There is something very wrong with the time/WU estimate. It's giving me way too many WUs for slow devices, and way too few WUs for fast devices.

Remembering that today is a Federal Public Holiday in the United States (where SETI is based), so "when staff get in" may be subject to variation and goodwill. Which there's usually plenty of.

With merely a few million US dollars, say 100-200, the seti@home project could have staff and hardware to operate like a modern corporation.

Sadly, I do not think the budget is anywhere near that.
