Message 1833699 - Posted: 2 Dec 2016, 20:55:21 UTC - in response to Message 1833672.

Have semi-problem to checkpoint (every ~3 minutes, not at <1 minute as is set) on AR:
4.195846
...
and in BOINC for AR 4.195846 (the WU is paused in BOINC)

(now BOINC is on r3578)
For this is Fixed:
- checkpoints every ~50 seconds
- <prog> almost == <fraction_done> for all duration of the run

Not fixed (something I forgot to report earlier):
- On 'Snooze' or any other pause of such task - the process waits ~10 seconds before exiting
-- in this "slow exiting" the app don't write to stderr.txt the usual:
GPU device sync requested... ...GPU device synched
Termination request detected or computations are finished. GPU device synched, exiting...

(this "GPU device sync" is written when pausing VLAR tasks)

- ALF - "Find out what you don't do well ..... then don't do it!" :)

Message 1833708 - Posted: 2 Dec 2016, 22:07:42 UTC - in response to Message 1833699.

There is 8.21 apps deployed for testing on beta.
Please verify your observations regarding excessive memory usage on all 3 app's flavours.
Regarding 10s exiting - it's the duration after that BOINC client kills app's process. Hence no acknowledgement of exit from app itself. App would exit on nearest checkpoint on its own. Again, specific to current SoG implementation and chosen length between sync points.
Lets see what app flavour your hardware select on beta before moving further on this topic.

We're not gonna fight them. We're gonna transcend them.

Message 1833711 - Posted: 2 Dec 2016, 22:17:19 UTC - in response to Message 1833647.

"Long" run (I did this ~6 h ago)

MB8_win_x86_SSE2_OpenCL_ATi_HD5_r3557.exe

WU:
09fe09aa.7329.14796.7.34.239
<true_angle_range>0.44810357783225</true_angle_range>

1) This was run under BOINC (no cmdline) and BoincTasks recorded (second "MB" is from "Virtual" column):
09fe09aa.7329.14796.7.34.239_0	01:01:18 (00:02:45)	0.04C + 1ATI	689.01 MB	696.77 MB

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/result.php?result_name=09fe09aa.7329.14796.7.34.239_0

2) Offline run - did not show change of max RAM used (from the above "under BOINC (no cmdline)" 15ms and this 60ms):
-tt 60
Target kernel sequence time set to 60ms

(721338368 bytes ~= 687.92 MB)

There is 8.21 apps deployed for testing on beta.
Please verify your observations regarding excessive memory usage on all 3 app's flavours.
...
Lets see what app flavour your hardware select on beta before moving further on this topic.

Not possible to "see what app flavour your hardware select on beta" - I run BOINC 6.10.58 so run "beta" only by app_info.xml (else I don't get any tasks)
So for "all 3 app's flavours" I need exact file-names to make (by hand) Download URLs

FYI:
float tt=60.f;//R: in ms
int sleep_quantum=15;//R: in ms.

So, default is 60ms, not 15.
test with -tt 60 should correspond to default. But -tt 5 couldn't.
So, what -tt 5 shows (just first and last readings)?

There is 8.21 apps deployed for testing on beta.
Please verify your observations regarding excessive memory usage on all 3 app's flavours.
...
Lets see what app flavour your hardware select on beta before moving further on this topic.
Not possible to "see what app flavour your hardware select on beta" - I run BOINC 6.10.58 so run "beta" only by app_info.xml (else I don't get any tasks)
So for "all 3 app's flavours" I need exact file-names to make (by hand) Download URLs

After some false starts (ancient CUDA apps), I got these from Beta:

    <file_ref>
        <file_name>setiathome_8.21_windows_intelx86__opencl_nvidia_SoG.exe</file_name>

You'll find that Eric is very precise and very consistent when he renames the files for stock release - watch out for the double underscore between the platform name and the plan_class.

No need, I posted links to own repo with r3571 & r3578 - same binaries.

btw, I see difference in memory consumption between non-HD5 and HD5 SoG. Still to see plain HD5.
But, cause non-HD5 should use same adaptation algorithm as SoG, -tt N test can be omitted.

Low statistics on HD5 so far but seems HD5 has lower memory consumption on VLAR, HD5-SoG - hier and non-HD5 in the middle.

And all of them far less than ~0.5GB on my host.
So, some driver-specific here.

There is possibility that speed of GPU (via number of iterations) influence on RAM consumption.
To check this I'm running beta both on HD6950 and C-60 devices. One could expect great memory consumption increase for C-60 (~6hous per BLC versus ~20mins for HD6950).
HD5 task completed 40% currently and shows ~136MB of committed memory. Will see what will be near to the end.

I just added new entry in the blog about OpenCL MultiBeam app optimization and tuning: http://lunatics.kwsn.info/index.php/topic,1808.msg61251.html#msg61251
Please consider to read it for better understanding of app functioning.

This time I considered -period_iterations_num and -tt options interactions and how to use them both in tuning process.

Thanks Raistmer for this detailed information.
To me it looks like old fashioned optimisation is not to bad.

So just wanted to have input on how much instances I should be running?

Running 1 WU would do more work per hour than running 4.

& Reistmer, can you answer me why OpenCL jobs (SoG 8.19) uses so much more CPU power than the CUDA ones?! example, SoG 8.19 uses 25% of CPU, while 8.01 CUDA42 uses about 5%...
:/

It's doing more work, so it needs more support from the CPU.

My understanding is that OpenCL has more overhead than CUDA. A bit like comparing C to Assembly I believe.

As I wrote numerous times here and on beta - the CPU usage depends on synchronization choices made inside Runtime/driver by particular vendor.
For CUDA nVidia provides possibility to chose sync strategy on application level. For OpenCL there is no such possibility so one should use what Runtime provides.
To reduce CPU usage on NV one can enable -use_sleep option that calls OS-provided CPU yield function (Sleep() on Windows and nanosleep on Linux) before calling Runtime synchronization function.
This allows to wait into Runtime sync less and hence, use less CPU on that wait.
Similar AMD Runtime sync calls consume much less CPU so usually AMD users don't need -use_sleep (but on some GPU/driver combos, especially APU ones high CPU usage can occur too).

EDIT: comparison OpenCL/CUDA as C/assembler is incorrect.
OpenCL corresponds CUDA driver API. OpenCL C++ bindings correspond usual highlevel CUDA.
IL corresponds PTX.
Advantage of CUDA on low-level - it allows embedded assembly and intrinsics.
And has vendor-provided binary-tuned FFT library that outperforms Apple's oclFFT source library.
Maybe new editions of OpenCL will allow embedded assembly too.

Regarding overhead - comletely dependent of particular vendor implementation.
If nVidia implement OpenCL as superstructure on CUDA - OpenCL runtime will have bigger overhead.
If AMD implements CUDA as interpreter to OpenCL constructs - CUDA will have bigger overhead there.

In reality on Windows nVidia implements both OpenCL and CUDA as superstructure of DirectX calls in some parts.

Wanted to share my app_confir part for SoG & sah WUs, listed for my nVidia GTX 1050Ti & Quadro M2000:

    </app_version>
	   <app_version>
       <app_name>setiathome_v8</app_name>
       <plan_class>opencl_nvidia_SoG</plan_class>
	   <max_concurrent>3</max_concurrent>
	   <cmdline>-use_sleep -unroll 16 -oclfft_plan 256 16 256 -ffa_block 8192 -ffa_block_fetch 4096 -tune 1 64 4 1 -tune 2 64 4 1 -instances_per_device 3</cmdline>
       <ngpus>0.25</ngpus>
    </app_version>

Any suggestion?

p.s. As listed before, all my GPUs are on SETi@home, while CPU power is on WCG.

No, that's copied from a CUDA60 closure of </app_version>...just checked!
Sorry...

I meant the numbers...how does anybody else run their 950 or 1050?!

On my Linux box with GTX 750 8.01 with CUDA 60 is extremely slow compared with 8.10 opencl_nvidia_sah, which uses a full CPU core while CUDA uses only 7%.
