AfD tests Merkel

...while here in Brexit land, a possible bone of contention between the US & UK?

"But they do believe that the UK's strong economic interest (via BP) in the Russian oil sector might over time lead to increased co-operation and investment - something currently circumscribed by the EU's sanctions."

Nigel Farage :) has been offered his own show by the Kremlin-sponsored RT television channel.
The aim is obviously to seek to destroy the EU.

EU should had learnt that Europe's countries and unions are fragile.
Not only EU members are thinking of exit the EU.
There are many separatist movements as well that complicate it further.
Some pro-EU, some not.

In total there are 118 separatist movements in Europe.

Yes. Too many countries and interests (cultural, religous, geopolitics and languages)
But France and Germany propose EU 'defence union'
https://euobserver.com/foreign/135022
Heck. The EU cannot agree of anything and even quibbles about how to handle refugees.
Now if the heat turns up and military is needed...

Similar to The USA. Prior to our Civil War.

Not quite.
There were not so many factions in America then as it is now in Europe.

Who cares what happens there...

EU is obviously a house of cards.
It takes only one nation to exit and the house crumbles...

Isn't this nice.
If a breach of that ethical code is proven, the Commission can deprive a former commissioner of his/her EU pension.

Will it happen?
Of course not.
