Message 63889 - Posted: 13 Jan 2005, 9:24:46 UTC

Jan 13, 2005

IMPORTANT NEWS: David Anderson, the creator of BOINC, has found and fixed a serious bug in the BOINC 'core client'. This causes failure of a job if the download of any of its input files fails (the correct behavior is to retry and complete the download, then run the job). Moreover, any other job that used the same files would also fail. A fixed core client should be available soon. This should make Einstein@Home work much better and eliminate the main source of job failure

Will this be also considered for SETI@home?

Patience is a virtue.

Undoubtably. Though the fix was in the BOINC Daemon ...

The question I have here is this..

Has the Einstein@Home project come public? I remember seeing a post regarding it saying that it had, but I have been unable to create an account ever since, and there has not been any new post since then.

this website says "Account Creation Disabled" http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/ So it is NOT open. One of their programmers made a mistake which allowed account creation, but that was quickly closed.

We are still waiting for the public release

It's going to be in the next Alpha version (coming Real Soon Now). When last I heard, they were undecided if it was going to make it in the public branch or not.

It's not a super-serious bug, really.

that's YOUR point of view Rob, it's possible, outside YOUR view, some people

would have a different point of view, if it's not forbidden to have a own

view...

I got more brocken work from Einsteins@home as your E-account in totaly shows.

Probaly with your less work returned, your clients are not affected

They're getting 4.14 out the door, it just hit Alpha... so yes, it's going to be patched for SETI@Home. Real soon now. :-)

Well, a new core client, v4.14, is now available for all platforms except Mac. Use at own risk.

Settle down, Ric... of course people can have different points of view and different ideas of what is serious and what isn't. :-)

It's okay... I still don't think it's a super-serious bug, but yes, it *is* a bug that is being patched.

Deep breaths... think calm, slow, thoughts.... we aren't out to get you... :-)

FWIW, one user has reported a problem with a CPDN wu after performing the upgrade to 4.14. Whether it's a coincidence or not remains to be determined.

If you're a subscriber to CPDN, consider delaying the upgrade until more details surface.

Message 64795 - Posted: 14 Jan 2005, 13:10:02 UTC

Today I installed BOINC GUI 4.14 on the most of my hosts as update over 4.13 and there is no problem to see anyway. And I wasn't awaiting to see a problem, because the change itself is small and the monolith GUI architecture as represented by 4.13 and 4.14 had have no problems with updates in the past.

Over all there is a risc every time you do a update. I personal update all projects, stop BOINC, check if all applications have finished and then install the new releases over the old. Sometimes I make a backup copy of the BOINC folder. Most of my hosts crunch CPDN too. So I am a little bit paranoid, not to lose a month of work. ;)

But it never happend and I hope this will not change in the future. :)
