hello everyone,

as the screensaver display data isn't the real thing, i was wondering if there are efforts planned to open the raw data sets (maybe pre- or post-computation) to the public, so that everyone can make use of the data, e.g. to write own software to search the data?

regards

I suspect that since the data was "Sent To" UC-Berkeley (which S@H is a part of, considering it's being run out of their campus), the plans probably boil down to 'Process the data on our own'/'Have first crack at it', then release it to everyone to double check the work that has been done on it...

The big issue, and it s HUGE issue is the size of the database at the core of SETI@Home. I can't remember the exact figures, but it is certainly a good few TByte. So transferring it is no trivial matter.

That said there is little to stop you taking a copy of every result you obtain and then doing some small scale analysis of your own. Just remember, a lot of time has already been spent in the collection and distribution of this data, and "those that be" in the project might take a dim view of your efforts.

If I were you, before doing anything substantive I would float your ideas past Eric Korpela, the project director and see what he has to say.

Before you even consider it, remember Seti@home doesn't necessarily "own" the raw data and Arecibo / Greenbank may insist on payment. Especially considering their funding shortfall.

I have a feeling that anyone with the skills to make a meaningful analysis of the raw data should already be employed by an organization that has the tools needed to do such a study. If I thought that I had such skills I wouldn't be sitting at home on the periphery of what could be the most important quest mankind has embarked on.

although... by accessing the data online, only the necessary amount of data would be transfered, or the data would stay onsite (regarding the legal stuff). bigdata analysts (and we should also consider this approach) are in huge demand these days, most of them working not on this task unfortunately.
just a thought...and it could also be a huge marketing thing (ccn report : seti data open for public, open source seti and so on, which could solve or at least help with the financial issues by raising the donations)
