The basic underling question in my mind is what happens to the coder who is unable or unwilling to write the code to unlock it? |

The basic underling question in my mind is what happens to the coder who is unable IF Apple does do this, and one of their programmers attempts it and reasonably fails, it would be 'business as usual', but might show up on the old Performance Review. or unwilling to write the code to unlock it? I don't have the link handy (it might have been on NPR.org), but I saw a headline that said several Apple employees 'go on record' as willing to quit if told to work on this.... |

Where's the common sense in this . They have probable cause a crime and a act of war . If ever there was a case for unlocking a phone this is it . But from some of the posts it sounds like they got it sorted . Apple anything for a headline . Big hoopla for nothing .....no wonder I hate Apple , but it's ok to have control of all the other functions on the phone right Apple !! |

Hmm, the FBI backing down or have they really found a way to unlock it? M$ wanted a PO and now they have it. Just remember how they are forcing W10 on you and making it impossible to opt-out. Just what the FBI wants on the phone, a forced O/S update. That or the FBI finally got the balls to ask NSA/CIA for help. Apparently they just go into the phone an cut the write enable line to the memory so it can't be overwritten and then brute force it. Heck they may even have a reverse hash table by now so they have only a small subset of combinations to try. After all they get a few of everything and attempt to break in just so they learn how to do it when necessary, and they have smart people who can reverse engineer software, never mind plant bugs into pseudo-random number generators making crypto easy to break. BTW, the above is the level of effort that law enforcement should be required to expend to get into a phone. That way it isn't used in routine matters. |

The basic underling question in my mind is what happens to the coder who is unable or unwilling to write the code to unlock it? FYI many of them intend to quit Apple if Apple is ordered to unlock. Then it would become very untenable for the court to order an individual to preform the service of unlocking. If the government tried they might well lose and perhaps lose big having the all writs act struck. (It seems like the government isn't really rushing to have the all Writ's act examined by an appellate court as they might just find ordering something out of nothing to be beyond the authority.) As to fail, that could be interesting. Was the failure because the person subverted the order of the court (contempt) or because the person didn't have the necessary expertise, or because it isn't possible? Er, person here includes Apple as corp's are persons! In any case I expect the FBI ends up with the source code to iOS, which is their real want here, or they get a program to unlock every iOS device on the planet, which will soon leak out and appear on the dark web. |

The Apple-FBI Whodunit: Who Is Helping The Feds Crack The Locked iPhone? Stoking the rumors was a new contract, posted in the government database on Wednesday but dated March 21 — the day when the FBI announced it may have found a new solution — for services from Cellebrite USA. Forensics experts quickly sought to dispel this particular contract's relevance, attributing it to software licensing renewal and pointing to the meager $15,278 price tag and given "principal place of performance" of Chicago, not San Bernardino. And the method mentioned to be likely? Taking the 'hard drive' (internal Flash storage) and using a chip reader to clone the information, meaning even if they trash the clone the info is still there.... |

this just in.. FBI unlocks San Bernardino shooter's iPhone, drops Apple legal fight Federal officials said Monday that they have unlocked the iPhone belonging to one of the San Bernardino shooters and are dropping a request in front of a federal judge that sought to force Apple to help with that effort. http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-fbi-drops-fight-to-force-apple-to-unlock-san-bernardino-terrorist-iphone-20160328-story.html |

this just in.. Now will the judge address the obvious perjury on the application for the warrant that Apple was the only entity capable of unlocking the phone? Or will another police lie be swept under the rug. |

For weeks, the FBI had said only Apple could help investigators lift the iPhone security features that stood in the way of its guessing the passcode. But last week, the government said a third party showed the FBI a new method that didn't require Apple's help. Did the FBI actually say in court that only Apple could do it, or was it just "We couldn't do it at this time, so let's get the developer [Apple] to do it for us"? Not much of a difference, yes... And it wouldn't be perjury either way, since usually it's 'did whoever said <statement> know it to be false or an unreasonable exaggeration at the time'. I think The FBI Has Successfully Unlocked The iPhone Without Apple's Help |

For weeks, the FBI had said only Apple could help investigators lift the iPhone security features that stood in the way of its guessing the passcode. But last week, the government said a third party showed the FBI a new method that didn't require Apple's help. Well as I understand the all writs act Application of the All Writs Act requires the fulfillment of four conditions: If the FBI found a different method, then applying for an all writs act warrant you have to specify that "no other remedy is available" and that is done by an officer of the court under penalty of perjury. True he [the agent] might have believed it, but I suspect he had no reason to know if it was true or not. If you don't know you can't say you do. |
