Doesn't say if anyone was tested for drink driving, but a 8mph on the train that's jogging speed, someone didn't even bother to look or was head down texting or three sheets to the wind.

BYROMVILLE, Ga. (AP) — Rail cars tumbled from an overpass onto a Georgia highway on Saturday, causing an evacuation and traffic headaches in a small town but resulting in no injuries.

CSX Railroad said 30 cars derailed. That included some that fell from the overpass onto Highway 90 at Byromville, roughly 55 miles south of Macon.

Resident Stephanie Chapman said she was on a deer stand more than a mile from town when it happened.

“You could hear the rail cars hitting each other — boom-boom-boom-boom-boom,” Chapman told The Associated Press.

It happened around 7 a.m. Saturday in the town with a population of about 500.

In an emailed news release, CSX said four of the cars held petroleum liquefied gas. No leaks were reported, but officials were monitoring air quality.

Byromville fire chief Brett Walls told WMAZ-TV there was an early call for an evacuation within a mile of the site.

6 injured in crash involving TRE train and tanker truck at site of fatal accident

FORT WORTH (TX)
Six people were injured Wednesday morning when a Trinity Railway Express train collided with a tanker truck at a crossing near N. Collins Street in far east Tarrant County, authorities said.

...
The location was the same crossing where two people died Aug. 25 when a dump truck struck a TRE train.

Eduardo Navarro, who has worked for a contractor near the crossing for a year, said Wednesday the intersection was dangerous.

“When the lights come on, you only get 10 seconds before the train arrives,” Quinones said. “You’ve got seconds to make a decision.

Seriously?
When the lights come on, you stop. If there isn't time to stop comfortably, then continue through.

She said that the signal crossing at that intersection is programmed to activate 47 seconds before a train enters it, more than double the Federal Railroad Administration’s minimum signal activation timing.

So is it 10 seconds or 47?

That's not good IMHO.
People will be sitting there thinking the lights are broken if they start ages before a train actually comes through.

(Likely need an app for their cell phone that tells them the signals are correct.)
This crossing also has gates. Perhaps the 10 seconds is the time lag between the lights and the gates closing?
As to timing you want it to go off early enough that granny with her walker has time to get off the tracks when it activates. Or LPG tanker Mack with his 80,000lbs load of explosive has time to pull off in low gear. Not everyone who crosses is in a Lamborghini.

Hash brown or cellphone? Man disputes traffic ticket
A Connecticut man is fighting a traffic ticket in court, and claiming a case of mistaken identity, saying the officer who ticketed him mistook a hash brown for a cellphone.

Stiber insists, however, that he was not on his cellphone when the officer spotted him.

Stiber said he had just bought breakfast at the McDonald’s in Norwalk, the Hour reported. As he crossed into neighboring Westport, a police officer pulled him over.

... He also provided phone records that showed he did not make or receive any calls within the hour he was given the ticket.

Maplewood woman crashes after watching Netflix while driving 70 mph
BARNESVILLE, Minn. — A Minnesota woman has been ticketed for watching Netflix while she was driving on Interstate 94 in northwest Minnesota and crashing her vehicle into the median cable barrier.

The woman, Taylor Thiets, 20, of the Twin Cities suburb of Maplewood was driving at about 70 mph last month down the interstate and has been charged with watching a television program before she crashed between Rothsay and Fergus Falls.

Some Australian statistics on road crashes- This is every road death since 1989 .
One particularly disturbing fact- for every 1 death, there are 27 injuries.

The 'baby hammock': A disturbing look back at 1970s child car safety.
Just before the first Australian standard for child restraints in cars was introduced, ABC's Four Corners looked at some of the child seats on the market and investigated their safety claims. This report by John Penlington aired on 21 February 1970.

Boeing 737 pilots battled confused safety system that plunged aircraft to their deaths – black box
Data suggests one of plane's many brains was stuck in anti-stall mode
Early data from the doomed plane's flight recorder suggests that for much of its 11-minute flight on October 29, the pilots were struggling with the craft's Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS).

This is a computer system designed to prevent the nose of the Boeing 737-Max from pulling too far up and putting the plane into a stall when under manual control. It has nothing to do with the airplane's autopilot.

........ Boeing, meanwhile, says that it believes its 737-Max fleet is still safe to operate.

There are 2 issues here.
As far as the safety of the 737-Max goes, this is the first major crash involving the aircraft, and it would appear the crash is a result of pilot training. Pilots from a US airline made a statement that they weren't aware of the anti-stall function. When moving from one type of aircraft to another the major focus of the training would be about the differences between the previous aircraft & the new one- they should be aware of it.

On the previous flight, there were issues with the aircraft that resulted in the same problems occurring- the anti-stall system pushing the nose of the aircraft down repeatedly. And the pilots went through the checklist, disabled the automatic stabiliser trim and were able to complete the flight without further issues.
Why did the crew on the crash flight not do the same thing? Why did they continue to fight the aircraft & not follow normal procedure and use the flight manual check lists as the previous flight's crew did?

The second issue relates to the maintenance of the aircraft.

Smart kid & one very lucky woman

Apart from the major upgrades from J8 M11 (Stansted Airport) to Great Dunmow & at Braintree, the A120 is an awkward road.
