Bernie, I don't suppose you caught the BNSF business train going by Galesburg this morning?

Well no the GBB camera have been unreliable of late and they were working on them today

However, I did just happen to see it passing the Chicago camera on Thursday

https://youtu.be/B6g6JiJIvE8

And just by chance again yesterday when it returned.

https://youtu.be/FIahodbCovs

The cars were from 6611 back:

Snoqualmie Pass, Stampede Pass (hep), Raton Pass, Marias Pass, Stevens Pass, John Reed and William B Strong.

I thought video was better as trying to cut and paste them all would have taken too long.

I was going to look them all up but it is a bit late here.

Very interesting door on the end. Equipment?

It's a roll-up door covering a picture window. The car is called a theater car and actually has inclined rows of seats inside, used for large groups of people to watch the receding track. The door being closed tells you there was no one on board. Several railroads have these cars, all reconfigured from some other type.

Having heard the train was sitting in the Amtrak yard Saturday, I went down and took some pictures from Roosevelt Road. I may post some (or not). The yard is no longer accessible by anyone without a good reason to be there; the ramp to Roosevelt is closed (supposedly due to a structural defect) and there is now a security gate at the other end of the yard (there will also be a gate at the ramp if it gets fixed).

Moments before two trains collided head-on, killing 12 people, a dispatcher was playing a game on his phone, authorities said.

The dispatcher was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and gross negligence Tuesday. German police said their investigation showed he had "violated operational rules" by playing the game until shortly before the collision on February 9.

Single track commuter line in a country like Germany, you would have hoped that inattention by a "dispatcher" would result in both trains coming to a halt some distance apart. Not both being able to proceed at speed.

Seems there are many parts of the world without any sort of automatic train protection.

My mistake, it's leaving tomorrow morning after the Metra rush. Figure it to be at Galesburg around 11 or a bit after.

And that departure was probably delayed by http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2016/04/13/metra-train-strikes-pedestrian-in-downers-grove/.

So, if I'm counting right that leaves the score at Amtrak 4 - Metra 4 as we near the bottom of the 4th?

Lots of people get killed by trains while crossing rails with headsets listening to music. The last was a beautiful 19 years old girl aiming to become a top model. She was killed by a Freccia Rossa fast train near Milano.

Well seems not much going on in rail land these days, and despite possible negative vibes, I present the penultimate Amtrak ACS 64 arriving from California yesterday.

#669 arriving on the California Zephyr.

Amtrak ordered 70, they started at 600 but with "666" not used 670 will be the last one.

All this grey! It really is too much!

As a tonic, I offer a recent photo that shows North American colour, North American long trains, and North American spring weather this year. Picture taken today in eastern Ontario.

Hard to feature that this is actually a photograph. Looks like a fine oil painting. Think I'll have to bump a Hubble pic for this on my desktop for a bit. Thanks for sharing ...

It's been longer than I thought since I last checked in with this thread.

Today I was contemplating what my first train orders will be when I'm dispatcher a week and a half from now.

One of the first two will likely be "431, you have authority out of Yard 6/7/8 [whichever one it's in] into the Tail Track and reverse on the Car Line to Station Track One."

The other of the first two depends on a couple of things. If it comes before the order to 431, it will be "3142, you have authority out of Yard 7 [probably] into the Tail Track, reverse onto the Car Line, and proceed in normal rotation to Depot St. and call, checking that all the switches are lined for your route." If this comes after the one to 431, it will probably exclude "to Depot St. and call." Also, it will only be said on the radio if I'm issuing it to the other guy who signed up for that car that day. If he gets bumped to coach conductor and I issue this order to myself, I will keep it in my head.

Then, probably, something like "431 is authorized for an 11:00 departure to Kishwaukee Grove, no meets eastbound, no meets westbound to Jefferson St., and return to Station Track One."

At some point will come "5383, you have permission out of Yard Two onto Station Track One and shuffle over to Two and onto your train." Then 5383 will get an order similar to the one above to 431, one hour later and returning to Two.

Mixed in there will probably come permissions for whatever switcher is operating to do whatever it wants, which will probably disrupt the operation of 3142 to some degree and cause me to order it to hold at Depot St. or Barn Nine North or somewhere else out of the way.

Oh, have I mentioned that I passed the rules test last Saturday? Have to do that every two years. Got 94, which is a slip from 97 the first time I took it.

Also, the second coal train departed this morning. The third one has to be out by Saturday.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-05-01/urgent-csx-train-derails-in-washington-dc-possible-hazardous-leak
Washington (AP) -- A CSX freight train derailed near a Metro stop in Washington, D.C., on Sunday morning, sending about 10 cars off the tracks and spilling hazardous material from one of them, officials said.

No injuries were reported and no evacuations were ordered.

The train derailed Sunday about 6:40 a.m. near the Rhode Island Avenue Metro station and one of the derailed leaked sodium hydroxide, which is used to produce various household products including soap and detergents, CSX spokeswoman Kristin Seay said.

Sodium hydroxide, also known as corrosive lye, is a chemical that can irritate and burn the skin and eyes. CSX says it is working with first responders to contain the chemical.
