This depends on the oil used to lubricate them.
Tullio

So...whit what do u lubricate a light? :D

Now how many ET's could pass through the eye of a needle is a valid question :-))

Here we go again Chris. You best define the size of the needle and the size of the aliens...lol. Although to get back on topic. most of the parameters on the Drake Equation amount to a SWAG (Systematic Wild Ass Guess) and that makes poor science. it is good for critical thinking but does not pass any scientific hurdle in my opinion.

Bob

yeah, but that SWAG get corrected!

Hugh Question??

Stephen Hawking’s $100 million question: Is anybody out there?

Scientists are about to embark on the biggest search yet for alien life, sweeping the skies for signals of civilizations beyond our solar system with $100 million from a Russian billionaire and the backing of physicist Stephen Hawking.

Whether we are alone in the universe has engaged minds down the ages, and the recent discovery that there may be tens of billions of habitable planets in our galaxy alone has added urgency to finding an answer.

From what I know about Yuri Milner he has a physics degree but then switched to business and made a good deal of money with Facebook. He has been giving prizes way above the Nobel prizes to theoretical physicists developing strings theory and the like. This is the first time he seems to be interested in astronomical observations.

Can Math prove that Aliens exist?

math has proven it, alien life exists: http://www.seti.org/drakeequation
;)

Also does it matter if we detect some form of intelligence in another galaxy?

Ah, now another intelligent question!

If they gave us the answer to curing all cancers we would be very grateful. If they told us how to exceed the speed of light we would be over the moon (literally in 1/2 a second!). We may not ever meet but we may be able to exchange information.

if u wanna cure cancers, try MCM research on WCG...link is in my signature!

btw, science has proven that 1/2 cancers r "bad luck" (or "bad thoughts") & 1/2 r "bad lifestyle"...
;)

back OT:
Wouldn't it be great to find an alien life form & easedrop on their TV...image a their shows on TVs...do they have art? films? theaters? commercials?

You are falling into the trap of thinking that they (if they exist) are like us. For all you know they all exchange information telepathically and don't need physical devices like TV's. They may also be a technological society that doesn't need commercial entertainment. This is supposed to be a proper science thread, not philosophical musings!!

yeah...but NONE of the civilization on Earth have been purely technological, from Andas to Yakutsk, from Scandinavia to South Africa & on other side of Atlantic / Pacific...
even though I like that Utopia version of technological society...can't help but not to see our past!

also, ALL species on Earth evolved in sound & sign languages...from birds to fishes, from mammals to human...so can't think of that kind of evolution, unless they r 100.000.000 y older species than us...

While Star Trek(original and Next Gen) and Lost in Space had mostly bipedal aliens, they also had some weird(to us) forms of intelligence they encountered, and I think that is far more likely to be what's out there.

Gordon has highlighted what I have always said, that sci fi films require human actors. Even Jabba the Hutt had three men inside working the controls! But there were trek episodes that had intelligence in the form of pure energy that manifested itself in fields of shimmering light. But it always spoke in good English though! But since the 50's we have been conditioned to think of ET as "little green men" which all started with the Mekon in Dan Dare from the Eagle comic.

The truth is we just don't know what if anything is out there, but it does seem to me that making all this fuss about new exo-planets in a habitable zone is narrowing the search down to just finding others like us. Perhaps that is what everybody actually wants to find, and not 20 foot slugs living in methane oceans.

In which case being that selective is making the search harder and longer, so perhaps we have got to the stage where the search itself is more fun than anything it might find?

Very good point Chris. We should concentrate on communication with ETI and not on finding their habitat in the universe imo. With our current technology we cannot physically get there to 'meet' anyway.

Still, finding exo-planets habitable by our standards, and of sufficient age, would seem to provide valuable hints on places we might concentrate a SETI search. We at least know that one Earth-like planet (our own) gave rise to intelligent life. Similar planets are not an unreasonable place to look for other intelligences.

I'm not at all certain that giant slugs living it methane seas would have an evolutionary need for intelligence, or, even if they were sentient, that they would be in a position to communicate by radio.

I do think the most important factor is communication rather than knowing how they look or where they live. Through communication different species can learn from each other and help each other as well.

Putting this article here.

Super-intelligent aliens could be trying to contact Earth, but humans are too stupid to pick up the signals, says Seti’s top scientist

At this very moment, an advanced alien civilisation may be trying contact Earth.

But despite our best efforts, we could be oblivious to their messages because humanity is not clever enough to pick up the signals.

This is according to Dr Nathalie Cabrol, who is leading the hunt for alien life at the Seti Institute in California.

What is her doctorate in ?

The Andromeda galaxy is 250 million light years away. Hard to find an Earth-like planet at that distance--and to what avail ?

Thanks Lynn

I tend to agree with that story .

I do believe E.T does know we are here but just thinks it's not the right time to show them self's and are in fact using tech we don't have yet to communicate .

I recon we will only pick up a Radio signal when they are ready to let us know they are there and they will deliberately transmit a signal we will pick up , but not until we finally learn to stop the killing and greed and live more piecefully .

Last thing they will wont is a aggressive war like planet having access to advance tech knowing we will only use that tech to make better weapons .

Remember Seti Institute has to generate publicity to grab cash. Sensational headlines that can't be proven wrong are one way to do that.

Thanx for the article Lynn.

I also literally wrote in my lettre to Dr. Hawking that I believe intelligent alien life is finding us too 'dumb' to have any interest in contacting us.

Julie and Glenn, your welcome!

The above article was on Fox news today.

Maybe we should give Alpha Centauri a call, it is the closest star system to the Solar System.

I think we can send out nuclear bomb alerts, and nobody is going to answer.
ET, knows where we live. They don't care. Why should they.
