Hi cousin, we decided to spend a month with you this year for vacation:) You forgot to add James that when the loony relatives turn up they leave without taking the silver and your Jewls but the Viking used to take the silver and then say "see ya bro were coming back next year bye " At least that is what happens on Vikings on Tv . I think the vikings had something to do with it. Yes they did:) Rurik or Rjurik, born about 800, died about 879, was, according to the Kiev Nestors Chronicle a viking said to be the founder of Kievan Rus and the progenitor of the PRINCELY HOUSE who ruled until 1598. According to the vast majority of historians, both in Sweden and internationally Rurik was from Sweden. But that Vikings came and stayed is very true. Finland, Russia, England, Greenland, Normandy and Newfoundland:) Newfoundland was called by the vikings Vinland meaning Grape Land because the climate was warmer then today:) |

Nobody ever asked the Vikings to come. They just show up one day like the loony relatives everyone of has. Hi cousin, we decided to spend a month with you this year for vacation:) Some relatives leave with the silver. I know first hand. The wife and I watch that show also. I kept saying i dont believe they killed the star of the show off. As I haven't studied Viking history.I wonder how accurate the time line is for the show? I do know that Normandy was descedents of the vikings,So I wonder if Rollo is the start of that clan in real life? [/quote] Old James |

Vikings on TV. Do you mean History Channel 2? Well.... I have only seen season 1. But some traditions are true. For instances burial ceromonies and that the wife had to stay home when the Vikings went on tour. They Always went on tour in the summer when there where a LOT of farming work to be done. |

According to what little real history has survived, Ragnar gets thrown into a pit of snakes by the nasty English King. But the TV version may not go down that path. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Well Where did the FIRST tsar of Russia came from? And England:) The ties with the Vikings and the Nordic countries remained a long time, even if you married into the Slavic lineages and spoke their language, Ruthenian. The usual prince named Vladimir / Volodymyr corresponds Nordic Valdemar, in use at both locations during the early Middle Ages. Yaroslav the Wise (in Sweden called Jarisleif) married Ingegerd Olofsdotter of Sweden, daughter of Olof Skötkonung and Slavic Estrid of the Obotrites. Jaroslav gave asylum to Olaf II of Norway and invited Harald III of Norway (Harald Hårdråde) who married Jaroslavs daughter Elisabeth of Kiev. Even Olav Tryggvason in and Magnus I of Norway sought refuge house Rurik genera, in Novgorod. According to Adam of Bremen, was Anund Gårdske, of the Rus in Kiev elected king of Sweden, about 1070, but aside by vote of the Swedes because he refused to participate in the king's traditional idols at the temple in Uppsala, a fate that also beföll Inge the Elder 1084 . Vladimir II Monomakh married Gytha of Wessex (ca. 1055-ca 1100), daughter of England's dane anglo saxon King Harold Godwinson of the House of Wessex. Mother of Valdemar the Great (1131-1182) of Denmark was Ingeborg of Kiev, daughter of Vladimir II Monomachs son Mstislav I and Christina Inge, daughter of Inge Stenkilsson and Helen of Östergötland. Yaroslav the Wise Jarisleif is probably from Finland because the names Jari and Leif are common there. Funny name Harald Hårdråde means Harald Hard Ruler:)

As I haven't studied Viking history.I wonder how accurate the time line is for the show? I Reackon it's quiet accurate . The History Channel is involved some how I think I've seen in the credits and there reputation would be on the line if they where not reasonably accurate . I guess we'll see if there show is myth or real . Pity there's only 10 episode this season |

Season one with Ragnar Lodbrok was strange to me. Since the stories of him already was written in the mid-1200s but why did History channel change so much? Tale of Ragnar Lodbrok is a Nordic fornaldarsaga. Ragnar Lodbrok was a great fighter, son of King Sigurd Ring. In the tale, he began to courageously slay the Lindorm, a fairy-tale monster in northern European folklore, who guarded the fair Þóra Borgarhjǫrt. To perform the slaying and not to get poisoned, he dressed in wolf-skin pants that he let cook in tar, hence he got his name - Lodbrok. He married then with Thora, who however died shortly thereafter. Later Ragnar sailed to Norway, and ended up there in the yard Spangarhed. There he met the beautiful Aslög (also called Kråka, not Lagertha), and her foster mother Grima. Aslög was the daughter of Sigurd and Brynhild. She followed with Ragnar, became his mistress and bore him four sons, Ivar Benlös, Björn Järnsida, Vitsärk and Sigurd Ormöga. On a visit to Uppsala King Östen offered Ragnar marriage to Östens daughter Ingeborg. He was betrothed to her, but well back home Aslög already knew on betrothal. She revealed now that she was the daughter of Sigurd and Brynhild. Aslög instead became wife of Ragnar. The broken promise against Ingeborg led to war between Ragnar and King Östen. In this battle first died Ragnar's sons Eric and Agnar, and then King Östen. On one expedition in Northumberland Ragnar became captured by King Ella, and died in his snake pit. Before that, he sang his song Krákumál, Kråksången,, where he invoked his sons, who later avenged his father. Tale of Ragnar Lodbrok can be found in the manuscript NKS 1824 b 4 ° (1824b) from about the year 1400. It has been preserved at the new Royal Collection, The Royal Library in Copenhagen. http://www.history.com/shows/vikings/videos/secrets-of-the-vikings-the-saga-of-ragnar-lothbrok |

Thanks Jann i was wondering how much they are keeping to the period and history and how much is the typical Hollywood do over . A problem is that there are 3 stories about Ragnar Lodbroke. Two danish and one norwegian version... And now the fourth version "The Vikings." with some historical facts woven in... The series is inspired by the tales of the raiding, trading, and exploring Norsemen of early medieval Scandinavia. It follows the exploits of the legendary Viking chieftain Ragnar Lothbrok and his crew and family, as notably laid down in the 13th-century sagas "Ragnars saga Loðbrókar" and "Ragnarssona þáttr", as well as in Saxo Grammaticus' 12th-century work "Gesta Danorum". Norse legendary sagas were partially fictional tales based in Norse oral tradition, written down about 200 to 400 years after the events they describe. Further inspiration is taken from historical sources of the period, such as records of the Viking raid on Lindisfarne depicted in the second episode, or Ahmad ibn Fadlan's 10th-century account of the Volga Vikings. The series is set at the beginning of the Viking Age, marked by the Lindisfarne raid in 793. Ragnars last word. "Grymta månde grisarna om de visste vad den gamle galten lider". "Pigs might grunt if they knew what the old boar suffers." Aslög (Kraka) Sigurdsdotter became 87 years. |

Not at all:) But the characters are sometimes mixed up. For instance Aslög (Kraka) Sigurdsdotter wife of Ragnar are in the serie called Lagertha meaning shield maiden:) Lagertha is maybe her second nickname in some of the stories. The name Kraka means Little. Do you mean King Ragnar Olafsson? Ragnvald Olafsson was a petty king of Vestfold in what is today Norway. He was the son of Ragnar Lodbrok or Olaf Geirstad-Alf . |

But the characters are sometimes mixed up. Makes for a good story line . If Ragnars son was killed in the battle as you say it would not be as interesting . They've also mixed the spiritual , mystic ,prophecy and as you say a legend or story . Probably be to boring if they didn't have a bit of Hollywood flair would it ! But thanks for giving me a better idea of what happen'd back then . I herd the Norsemen converted to christianity some time around then which surprised me so they are keeping the main historical facts there by the sounds of what your saying . |

Converted is perhaps too much to say. At that time Jesus "White Christ" was just another God. Not until in the beginning of the 1000's we sort of converted. And we still have old pagan traditions. |
