Do the caps serve some function other than to protect the ends when the tool is not in use?

Is it an oil sump drain plug key? But I don't understand the significance of the two covers for the ends...

The end caps were not explained. Please expand on you answer please.

Does it work on Bosch alternators?

Nope. But that post about the Dodge clutch was a near miss. But was in the ballpark. Or next door.

On most cars I am familiar with, the things "next door" to the clutch are the starter, transmission, and flywheel. Since it is not the transmission, and starters are usually plug-and-play, something to do with the flywheel.

Does the star end mesh with the teeth on the flywheel?

Not at all. It depends on the year of the car as to which end of the tool you use.

Hey, I drive a TDI Audi. It moves. I think it has 2 rubberbands instead of springs.
So does it have something to do with the transmission?
