A worthy cause.

Hi CC :) could you give me a brief outline of what happens with tomnod - not the cause as such because I'm sure its worthy - more the computing side. Since returning to crunching projects other than seti I've been having... some issues with my computer... and frowning at it hasn't instilled it with a desire to behave... yet :)

Hi Anniet!

Tomnod is a service offered by Digital Globe, who offers to position their satellites for a given area to take detailed photos. The Tomnod part is a consensus algorithm, where people look at the photo given and follow whatever marking rules are given for that particular search, and then mark the photo. A consensus is then taken as to how many participants agree upon whether object "a" is a possibility for further search. It has been used for the search of downed airliners, ships and crew, and biological surveys, among other things.

Currently, the Tomnod system is using a very simple search on a map, looking to find isolated villages that may need medical help. The search is within a defined area of polygons, and in this one, you just click that, yes, there is a building, or no, there is not.

And the search, carried out by air and ship, has so far proved to be very difficult because of bad weather with strong winds and rain.
