First Ebola Vaccine Test Starts in Guinea

CONAKRY, Guinea, March 26, 2015 (ENS) – One year after the current outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa that has claimed more than 10,000 lives, the Guinean government with the World Health Organization this week began the first trial of an Ebola vaccine in an affected community. The vaccinations are taking place in the Basse-Guinée, one of the areas where most Ebola cases are found in the country.

The proposal to conduct ring vaccination tests of VSV-EBOV, an Ebola vaccine developed by the Public Health Agency of Canada, received an excellent response from the community in a small village in the Coyah prefecture, where the trial team arrived on Monday.

"We are grateful to the Liberian people who volunteered for this important clinical trial and encouraged by the study results," NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci said in a statement. "Now we must move forward to adapt and expand the study so that ultimately we can determine whether these experimental vaccines can protect against Ebola virus disease and therefore be used in future Ebola outbreaks."
The volunteers will be followed for at least a year, with blood samples tested six and 12 months after vaccination to determine how long the immune response lasts.

Ebola outbreak: Sierra Leone in lockdown

The authorities in Sierra Leone are enforcing a three-day lockdown to curb the spread of Ebola, with the entire population ordered to stay at home.

There is a two-hour exemption on Friday to allow Muslim prayers and a five-hour window for Christians on Sunday.

Volunteers are going door-to-door, looking for people with signs of the disease and reminding others how to stay safe.

Guinea declares Ebola 'health emergency' in five regions

The restrictions include the quarantining of hospitals and clinics where new cases are detected, new rules on burials and possible lockdowns.

The Ebola outbreak began in Guinea in December 2013.

In January, the World Health Organization reported a steady drop in cases in the three epicentre countries.

But renewed concern has been triggered by fresh setbacks in these countries - Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Liberia urges sexual caution to beat Ebola outbreak

The West African nation suffered a setback in its efforts to end a year-long outbreak of the disease earlier this month when it recorded its first new case of Ebola in several weeks.

The patient, a 44-year-old woman, died on Friday. More than 10,300 people have succumbed to the disease across Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone, the three countries hardest hit by the worst Ebola epidemic on record.

Deputy Health Minister Tolbert Nyenswah, who heads Liberia's Ebola response, said there was evidence to suggest the woman may have contracted the disease through sexual contact.

Research has shown traces of Ebola in semen of some survivors for at least 82 days after the onset of symptoms, meaning they could carry the disease long after they have recovered.

There is no conclusive scientific proof that these traces are infectious. But as a precaution, the World Health Organization (WHO) advises Ebola survivors to abstain from sex during a 90-day period following recovery or, failing that, to practise safe sex.

U.S. Ebola Patient Improves

An American health worker being treated for Ebola has improved, the National Institutes of Health said Monday.

"The status of the patient with Ebola virus disease being treated at the NIH Clinical Center has improved from serious to fair condition," NIH said in a statement. "No additional details about the patient are being shared at this time."

Sierra Leone Ebola lockdown exposes hundreds of suspected cases

(Reuters) - A three-day lockdown in Sierra Leone has exposed hundreds of potential new cases of Ebola, aiding efforts to bring to an end an epidemic that has already killed 3,000 people in the country.

Officials ordered the country's 6 million residents to stay indoors or face arrest during the period that ended late on Sunday as hundreds of health officials went door-to-door looking for hidden patients and educating residents about the virus.

Reports to authorities of sick people increased by 191 percent in Western Area, which includes the capital, during the lockdown compared with the previous weekend, said Obi Sesay of the National Ebola Response Center.

New, whole-virus vaccine for Ebola effective in primates

A study published in Science demonstrates that vaccination with a mutated form of the Ebola virus provides some measure of protection to non-human primates. This finding places the vaccine one step closer to clinical trials in humans.

The researchers publishing this study have developed what’s called a “whole virus” vaccine for Ebola. Viruses have proteins on their exterior and genetic material on their interior. Whole virus vaccines present the host’s immune system with multiple viral proteins and the viral genetic material. These vaccines trigger broader immune system responses than vaccines that only present a single protein from the virus. Whole virus vaccines have had widespread success in offering protection against potentially deadly diseases such as smallpox, measles, and influenza.

If sorrow were a landscape, here’s how it would look from a cruising altitude of 30,000 feet. This graphic maps the global cost of early mortality—some 1.7 billion years of human life forfeited annually—sorted by cause of death. That’s 1.7 billion years of harvests and weddings, of factory work and music lessons and novels and new ideas that were supposed to happen and now won’t.

As you read this, 3,000 young kids are dying from diarrhea that a few zinc tablets might have stopped. Cost: 38 cents per Life!

After a year fighting Ebola, we must change our approach to globalhealth risk to save lives.
Ebola vaccines have little in the way of commercial markets, so the risks should be shared between governments and industry, says Seth Berkley..
