More good news.

Falling Ebola cases show 'turning point'

There has been a "turning point" in the Ebola crisis, with cases falling in the three affected countries, World Health Organization officials say.

Just eight cases were detected in Liberia in the last week down from a peak of 500-a-week in September. Guinea and Sierra Leone have also seen falls.

The WHO said the figures were the "most promising" since the outbreak started.

But it continues to urge caution, and to highlight the need to find those who had contact with Ebola patients.

Just five Ebola cases left in Liberia, government says

(Reuters) - Liberia, once the epicenter of West Africa's deadly Ebola epidemic, has just five remaining confirmed cases of the disease, a senior health official said on Friday, highlighting the country's success in halting new infections.

The worst Ebola outbreak on record has killed more than 8,600 people in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Earlier this year at the height of the outbreak in Liberia, hospitals without beds for new patients were forced to turn away victims and bodies were left in the streets.

Ebola virus 'has killed a third of world's gorillas and chimpanzees' – and could pose greatest threat to their survival, conservationists warn

The Ebola virus currently poses the greatest threat to the survival of great apes, conservationists have warned, after killing an estimated third of the world's gorillas and chimpanzees since the 1990s.

The unprecedented current Ebola epidemic in West Africa has killed some 8,641 people, according to data from the World Health Organisation, while the first batch of GlaxoSmithKline's experimental Ebola vaccine was expected to arrive in Liberia today.

Ebola crisis: Experimental vaccine 'shipped to Liberia'

The first batch of an experimental vaccine against Ebola is on its way to Liberia.

The shipment will be the first potentially preventative medicine to reach one of the hardest hit countries.

But experts say that, with Ebola cases falling, it may be difficult to establish whether the jab offers any protection against the virus.

It has been produced by British company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and the US National Institutes of Health.

Ebola nurse: Pauline Cafferkey 'happy to be alive'

UK nurse Pauline Cafferkey has said she is "very happy to be alive", having been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery from Ebola.

Speaking to the BBC in her first broadcast interview, Ms Cafferkey, 39, admitted she had felt like "giving up" as her condition became critical.

She said she was now looking forward to returning to "normal life" and had no current plans to return to West Africa.

She is the second Briton to recover from Ebola during the current outbreak.

I'm very happy for her.

It's easy to be pessimistic about everything economic, but it does pay to stand back, look at the big picture and check that pessimism against the long term data.
Here is a thought-provoking presentation by Professor Hans Rosling in the World from the Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos 2015 that reveals the surprising trends shaping today’s world.

Ebola virus epidemic: global picture and impact on children

A total of 20,206 probable and suspected cases of Ebola virus disease (EVD) and almost 8,000 deaths have been reported as of Dec. 29, 2014, from the four currently affected countries (Guinea, Liberia, Mali and Sierra Leone) and four previously affected countries (Nigeria, Senegal, Spain and the United States). In the three most affected countries, the case fatality rate among those with a definitive outcome has been 71%.

Prevent Another Ebola With Insurance Plan, World Bank Head Says

The world needs some kind of insurance plan to help countries defend against the next pandemic and prevent disasters like the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, World Bank President Jim Yong Kim said Tuesday.

Ebola just passed the 22,000 mark in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, the World Health Organization said earlier on Tuesday. And 8,800 people have died of the virus.

Drop In Ebola Cases Makes Scientists Wonder If Virus Immunizes As Well As It Kills

A recent sharp drop in new Ebola infections in West Africa is prompting scientists to wonder whether the virus may be silently immunizing some people at the same time as brutally killing their neighbors.

Are we starting to see the end of Ebola?

Ebola outbreak: Virus mutating, scientists warn

Scientists tracking the Ebola outbreak in Guinea say the virus has mutated.

Researchers at the Institut Pasteur in France, which first identified the outbreak last March, are investigating whether it could have become more contagious.

More than 22,000 people have been infected with Ebola and 8,795 have died in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Scientists are starting to analyse hundreds of blood samples from Ebola patients in Guinea.

They are tracking how the virus is changing and trying to establish whether it's able to jump more easily from person to person

"We know the virus is changing quite a lot," said human geneticist Dr Anavaj Sakuntabhai.

With Just a Few New Cases of Ebola, Liberia's Kids Head Back to School

There's some good news out of the Ebola epidemic. The virus has slowed so much in Liberia that local officials are re-opening the schools there and global health officials say they can now shift into a new mode: trying to end the epidemic.

Liberia reported just four new cases of Ebola last week — a far cry from 300 new cases per week reported there, on average, during August and September. That gives officials a break from scrambling just to isolate and treat patients. Now, they can really start working on putting out the embers of the epidemic.

Ebola Flare Ups Continue Where Victims Don't Trust Aid Groups

GENEVA, Jan 30 (Reuters) - West Africa will be lucky to wipe out Ebola this year, as the local population remains suspicious of aid workers, especially in Guinea, the Red Cross said on Friday.

The virus is "flaring up" in new areas in the region and not all infections are being reported, said Birte Hald, who leads the Ebola coordination and support unit of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

"We are also seeing that in places like Sierra Leone and especially in Guinea that it is flaring up in new districts all the time, with small new chains of transmission, which means that it's not under control and it could flare up big-time again," Hald told a news briefing in Geneva.

UK healthcare worker returns for Ebola monitoring

A British military healthcare worker has been flown back to the UK from Sierra Leone for Ebola monitoring.

The individual suffered a needle-stick injury while treating a patient in the West African country, which is among those affected by the Ebola outbreak.

The person has been admitted to the Royal Free Hospital in north London, Public Health England (PHE) said.

More than 22,000 people have been infected with Ebola and 8,795 have died in Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia.

The individual, who is being treated in isolation, does not have symptoms but is likely to have been exposed to the virus, the Royal Free said.

Ebola-hit Liberia delays school reopening

MONROVIA: Liberia's education ministry said on Sunday it had postponed by two weeks the reopening of the country's schools, which were closed six months ago to limit the spread of the Ebola virus.

Classes had been set to resume on Monday, but the ministry said in a statement parents and students needed more time to prepare for the new school year.

"Classes will start on Monday, February 16, 2015," the statement said.

Liberia is one of three west African countries hit by the deadliest Ebola outbreak on record, together with Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Schools in all three countries were closed last year over the outbreak, which has killed around 9,000 people.

Ebola has killed about 9000 humans since june 2014.
Common flue kills up to 500.000 per year.
Malaria kills about 1 million persons per year.
That is 3000 per day!
