Right now BOINC has about 20 tasks in the cue and at least four that are started. So when the screensaver comes on it flips between the running tasks so rapidly I can't see the graphs. I know they are basically meaningless but it is entertaining to watch them from time to time. So, is there a setting that restricts how many tasks are active at one time?

Yes Bob you can , change the computer preferences , in the processor usage tab to

on multiprocessor systems use at most ?? % of the processors

in your case change this to 25%

but leave

use at most ?? % cpu time .

leave this at 100%

This will not effect your GPU

The way to do tweaks to that are 'Screensaver Settings', not "setting that restricts how many tasks are active at one time"

The only other thing he can do is option 4

This has an effect only if it is shorter than the project graphics duration and only if your computer can run multiple BOINC tasks simultaneously (e.g., if the computer has multiple processors).
If you choose never, the project graphics for just one task will be shown for the entire project graphics duration of each cycle, switching only if that task stops running.

I tried BilBG's method and it didn't work.

Yes Bob i thought that mite happen but i didn't wish to upset him . pain in the bum but only way is to do what i said but it also mite not work if your doing units on the GPU .

Looks nice the screen saver but slows things down or it used to i haven't used the screen saver in years because it slowed the times down .

Bob i just remembered there is one thing you can try but depends how you set Bionic up i can't do it on mine as i set it up without the graphics .

Turn the screen saver off and and then click on 1 unit and show graphic's then it will display only 1 of them all the time if i remember but i can't remember if it will let you go full screen . If you wish to see the graphic's

when you click on one unit the show graphic's is on the left hand side of the client under show active tasks . If it's greyed out then you can't do it as you never set it up when you installed Bionic .

What means "it didn't work"?

What do you see exactly?
What did you expected to see?

(if you see 'flickering' - this is totally different problem)

Right now BOINC has about 20 tasks in the cue and at least four that are started. So when the screensaver comes on it flips between the running tasks so rapidly I can't see the graphs. I know they are basically meaningless but it is entertaining to watch them from time to time. So, is there a setting that restricts how many tasks are active at one time?

There are two different kinds of answers depending on exactly what you want.
-If you were just wanting to watch one of the instances while still running more in the background. Then the screen saver setting would be the best option.
-If you want watch every single task via the screen saver. Then limiting how many tasks BOINC runs is the best option.

The screen saver option to adjust would be Switch between project screensavers every set to never, or a very high value greater than the time it takes to run a task.

As described in the manual:
Switch between project screensavers every: selects how often to switch among project graphics within the project graphics duration.

It is customizable for exactly what you would like. In either case

Yes Hal9000 i did put that up , but like a lot of things what it's suspose to do and what it actually does are two different things .

The problem is in his description not exactly say what is meant by "so rapidly" (is it every second or every minute?):
"when the screensaver comes on it flips between the running tasks so rapidly I can't see the graphs"

He may in fact have the BOINC screensaver flickering/flashing problem:

BilBg it's not the same problem it also happened to me . It's not flashing it's showing each task quickly . It's why i don't bother with it now and i don't even load the graphics .

The link you put up and the thread it takes you too is 4 yrs old and looks like it was not fixed then either .

His best option is just to turn the screen saver off and click on a unit and show graphics and go full screen and just leave it like that .

I don't think anybody has looked or changed the screen saver in a very long time and just has a few bugs with the latest software now . That's about all i can think is the problem .

The cure for "BOINC screensaver flickering/flashing problem":
- go to older (7.2.33) or newer (dev 7.4.8++) BOINC version:

P.S.
Some people around here (which I deliberately ignore) think that 'they' may write in 'gibberish' English which 'mite' help someone but I doubt it gives more than a confusion ...

Hope that helps ;) (this is the end line of all useless posts on any forum)
