The Russian Crew aboard the ISS has been doing swipes on the outside surface of the ISS and have found sea surface plankton alive and well on the outside of the ISS. There have been many theroies how this could happen but its truely amazing that the plankton are living in space in a vacuum. Is this alien life weve been searching for or are these one celled animals a lot more capible of interstellar travel. Either way its a amazing discovery. |

I would like to see this news coming from a more official source before getting all excited about it. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

It's just plankton. Not exactly what I'd call alien... |

It's just plankton. Not exactly what I'd call alien... But if it is found that plankton can actually survive in space it puts a whole new light on where life can be found. Plankton is life, just in a very low form. IF it is found to be true that any form of life can survive, unprotected, exposed to the harshness of space then the probability of life being widespread throughout the universe rises by several orders of magnitude. But i am waiting for some peer review reports before I get too excited here. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. We also have to remember that the space station is below the Van Allen Radiation belt in the safe zone . Will be a different story at the higher altitudes where it would have been exposed to the full force of the Sun's radiation and Cosmic rays . |

Within the last couple of days, someone from the German Space Agency has reportedly addressed the claim of plankton found on the outside of the International Space Station. It appears that bacterial plankton was found. Whether it was still alive at that time is unclear. The origin of the plankton remains speculative. An atmospheric transport mechanism, carrying the plankton upward from Earth's surface has been suggested. http://www.openminds.tv/german-space-agency-chimes-discovery-sea-plankton-iss/30035 |

The original Russian report indicated that the plankton might be alive and thriving on the outside of the space station. Samples brought to Earth and analyzed revealed bacterial DNA. This analysis was unable to determine ( the article says) whether the organisms were still alive or not. More samples would be needed, it is claimed, to establish this. |

It does seem that the sample may have come from earth possible from visitors to station and live a short time before running out of energy |

I think it was intended as a joke rather than an insult. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |
