Word is that they determined, rather quickly, that the man does not have the ebola virus. I think, on that basis, they let everyone go about their business.

How? A bloody questionnaire? The TEST for Ebola isn't 'rather quick'. It takes, iirc, 1 to 3 DAYS for it to complete.

Looks to me like Ebola isn't the only thing contagious coming out of Liberia... It seems that 'very poor judgement' is also spreading from there via cross-border infection greatly assisted by air-travel.

That's what I thought too. From what I have read there is no EPT type test for the ebola virus.

ROFL... EPT... "The most advanced technology you will ever pee on..."

But the problem with that sort of test is it would not return a positive result until the person was ALREADY contagious (shedding the Ebola virus in their excreted bodily... fluids such as saliva, urine, etc).

The only sort of test that exists now that could detect infection BEFORE the person became contagious is a blood test checking for antibodies to the Ebola virus. That means a blood sample. And I am not familiar with any advances in speed-tests for Ebola such as the blood glucose tests that diabetics now use. It would take years to develop, and would be strain-specific and would quickly lose its effectiveness as the virus mutates (as is doing rather rapidly now in West Africa).

To the best of my knowledge, capability to accurately test for Ebola requires testing the sample multiple times in a laboratory looking for antibodies to all the various strains in sequence (and also requires a trained lab tech. to interpret the test results). All this takes time. I, frankly, was surprised that it only took as short a time frame as it did in Mr. Duncan's case (in Dallas).

This whole situation stinks like someone is playing a variant of what we used to call years ago 'Russian roulette'. Only instead of holding the gun to their own head as they pull the trigger, they are holding it to all of ours.

Per http://www.cdc.gov/vhf/ebola/diagnosis/ ELISA testing is used and those tests take about 3-4 hours lab time.

This case is not good. Treated and released.

Former Ebola patient admitted to Worcester hospital with infection

Dr. Richard A. Sacra, who was treated for and declared free of Ebola virus in Nebraska nine days ago, was hospitalized in isolation Saturday in Worcester with what doctors said is probably a respiratory tract infection and is being monitored for an Ebola relapse.

Though physicians believe Sacra’s illness is most likely not a recurrence of Ebola, doctors at UMass Memorial Medical Center are following guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and have isolated him to test for the deadly virus and determine his illness, the hospital confirmed. Hospital officials said determining his illness should take up to 36 hours.

CDC director Tom Frieden holds press conference on Ebola

CDC chief warns against restricting entry to the US over Ebola crisis

Federal officials confirmed Saturday that the suspected Ebola patient at the District of Columbia’s Howard University hospital does not have the fatal disease and reiterated their top priority is protecting Americans, amid widespread concerns about a confirmed Ebola case in Dallas.

Dr. Thomas Frieden, directorof the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said the federal government is looking at different safety-related suggestions from Capitol Hill and beyond, but he suggested the key is to control the deadly virus where it started overseas, not limiting entry to the United States.

How does restricting entry into the USA make it more dangerous?

Tens of thousnads of people enter the US every day. They carry all sorts of diseases - HIV, cold viruses, flu, herpes etc etc. Should we stop everyone from entering? Ebola is easily contained with a modern health care system such as the US possess. The only pandemic we should fear is the spread of FOX news generated hysteria.

I hope time proves you right. None of the other diseases you mentioned are more than 50% fatal and kill within a month of infection.

If they ban people leaving those country's then there will be caos and they may collapse and then there would be no way to control it .
People will find a way out of those country's only it won't be monitored , so it would be better to screen anybody from west Africa as they come in and not cause a panic in West Africa

The CDC is not run by idiots. It is run by the people who have the most expertise in controlling and treating epidemics such as Ebola. They have been involved in controling previous outbreaks. As a health care professional, I find it disgraceful that we are accused of incompetence or not caring about citizens or not knowing what we are doing. Ebola is simply not a signifcant health threat to the US. The constant references by FOX, bloggers, in internet chat rooms etc that this going to be some apocalyptic event have no basis in reality. If you are worried about major threats to US citizens life expectancy, then guns and cars are where your efforts should be directed...

FOX News is behind the Hysteria? They ONLY have 3 Million Daily Viewers. Very silly. You really believe this?

The Human Race has always become Hysterical over many, many, many things (never needed FOX News).

The Idiot's who run Agency's, like the CDC, MUST understand this, and Control the Hysteria. NOT wish it away, or say it is stupid.

I studied journalism, know all about the (Belgian) media. One thing the media is very good at is creating hysteria or even mass hysteria (people are known to act like sheep, following the herd) One thing I strongly believe is Ebola is easily contained with a modern health care system such as the US or other industrialized countries possess.

True. But Ebola cannot be spread until the person is symptomatic, and disease onset is so rapid (1-2 days) and debilitating that it is difficult for it to spread far. Whereas AIDS/herpes flu etc etc can be spread prior to symptoms appearing, thus making dissemination of the disease much easier. This accounts for why we have not had any confirmed Ebola cases related to the Texas case, despite him having been in the confines of a passenger airliner with hundreds of others for many (8-10?) hours.

The patient flew from Liberia to Brussels and then on to the States, no hysteria here or contaminations for that matter.

The above doesn't have anything to do with Peoples Hysteria. Which is the same as Mob Thinking.

Hysteria has nothing to do with Medical Science, nor Facts.

Anyone, understanding Human Nature, or has dealt with mobs, understands this. The CDC, in not addressing this issue, is displaying complete ignorance, and making the situation worse.

The Intelligent response is not calling The People (MOB) Stupid, Uneducated, or Worse: Those in Authority MUST address the Hysteria, and give The People Something.

That is how it works in The Real World.[/quote]

I did not call the people stupid. It was you who called the CDC idiots. I thought the CDC gave an excellent presentation of why Ebola is not a major threat. I am all in favor of giving people all the facts and letting them decide. And hysteria usually takes over when people are not given the facts. Plus I also happen to live in the Real World.

It would probably help to reduce the media hysteria that when there is a possible case people from the CDC swoop in to deal with it. Otherwise you end up with people left in an apartment with the infected laundry, police officers entering the apartment with no protective equipment, the ambulance used to transfer the patient being used for the next two days and the vomit being left for a while until some cleaners come along with no protection and a jet washer and flush it down the drain. And the people possibly exposed being told to stay at home under observation.

All perfect media fodder, and if you do get it, it's not like a couple of days bed rest and some chicken soup and you'll be fine. The odds are worse than flipping a coin on whether you cark it in the next couple of weeks.

Spanish nurse first to contract Ebola outside West Africa

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/10/06/us-spain-ebola-idUSKCN0HV1MC20141006

MADRID (Reuters) - A Spanish nurse who last month treated a priest in Madrid who died of Ebola has tested positive for the disease, becoming the first to contract it outside West Africa, a source within the health authorities said on Monday.

The nurse treated elderly priest Manuel Garcia Viejo at the Madrid hospital Carlos III when he was repatriated from Sierra Leone with the disease.

Garcia Viejo died days later, the second Spanish priest to die after being repatriated from Africa with the disease.

Thomas Eric Duncan, the Ebola patient in Dallas, starts getting experimental treatment

The first person diagnosed with Ebola on American soil has begun receiving an experimental medication, just as officials announced his condition was worsening.

Thomas Eric Duncan is now being treated with brincidofovir, receiving an investigational medication in late-stage testing for other types of viruses, officials said Monday.
