American doctor Kent Brantly, who was infected with Ebola in July, received a vial of blood from an Ebola survivor before being evacuated to an Atlanta hospital. Brantly also got the experimental drug ZMapp and it's unknown whether either helped him recover.

I've had dengue fever :( horrible... also referred to as bone crusher's disease in some places (on account of it feeling like your bones are being sat on by a portly and somewhat sadistic elephant). It really is widespread and likely to become more so unfortunately. I think it's one of those diseases that have been neglected - like ebola. Unlike ebola however, most people recover fine - although as soon as they have immunity to one strain of the virus, they are at high risk of getting very ill indeed if they fall ill with another strain of it.

It's spread buy Mosquitoes . Here we are releasing millions of Mozzy's that are sterile or have sterile offspring as well as spraying to kill them

Well if the person lives he or she has antibodies for that diasese or strain in there blood. When antibodies stop working we are all dead. A transfusion wont help.

I'm shocked to hear you had the fever Annie. Glad you recovered. I've heard of the disease, just not in detail as described by you, Annie. Horrible to even think one strain and another. :(

None of this is comforting disease wise. I feel sorry for all Australians, and hope health officials spray those mosquitoes to hell.

Glenn, dengue fever has been known here in Australia since the first European settlements started in our warmer regions (northern New South Wales, Queensland and the Northern Territory) from the later half of the 19th century.

Some speculate that it has always been here while some think that it was introduced by travelers from the north (either by the 1st Aboriginals, Asian fishermen, or European traders) but as our records are so limited by our short recorded history either side could be right.

Keeping water tanks well screened and by not leaving standing open water around your property (i.e. water in still ponds or in pot plant trays, etc,..) are a big help as this discourages the mozzies from breeding.

With dengue, any mosquito can get infected from biting an infected human. It doesn't get sick - but it stays infected for the rest of its life and so transmits the disease onwards. I actually caught it from a tick bite - my own fault I'm sure... I did love making friends with wild animals :) still do really :)

But the tip about not leaving standing water around and/or uncovered is a good one. It doesn't take a lot of the wet stuff to get a ton of the buzzy ones :/

I have to wonder if the sudden increase of rear diseases spreading to places that have not had them as they are normally only found in warm climates weather we are now seeing 1 of the effects of Global warming .
