Surface Impressions of Rosetta’s Comet Surface structures are becoming visible in new images of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko taken by the scientific imaging system OSIRIS onboard the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft. The resolution of these images is now 330 feet (100 meters) per pixel. One of the most striking features is currently found in the comet’s neck region. This part of 67P seems to be brighter than the rest of the nucleus. http://www.nasa.gov/jpl/rosetta/comet-67p-churyumov-gerasimenko-20140724/index.html |

Thanks Lynn weird looking thing looks like someone tried to stick 2 great big boulders together or is trying to pull 1 big boulder apart but it's sticking like a piece of silly putty when you try and pull it apart. |

Welcome Guy's :-) Some kind of double comet? The media, me thinks hyped this up, don't remember why?? |

I wonder if that was what all the Dooms dayers where going on about . Lord Ray'el posted a vid from what looked like the SOHO sat's that showed 2 tails and it formed a cross and what looked like Jesus on it . And then there is the 1 about a comet having 2 tails but close up's and a bit of fiddling around with the brightness that showed what looked like a space craft all in the last 6months or so if your interested i'll get the links of my twitter account and post them here the 1 about the cross and Jesus is interesting to watch , can't work out if it was fudged or not doesn't look like it |

About which 1 Annie the Jesus video looks like it's from SOHO i have put a link in the sun thread it will take you to SOHO and click on pick of the week and then on what size or res you wish to watch it in to get a idea of the type of video . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2394LBlGYn4&feature=youtu.be here is the Video so called Lord RA'EL put up on my twitter feed ... very clever hahahaha Lord RA'EL is you know the man in charge upstairs God ... so if ya think i'm nuts then he beats he by a country mile hehehe I'll try and find the other 1 Annie a bit later on tomorrow late here |

Rosetta’s Comet: Imaging the Coma Less than a week before Rosetta's rendezvous with comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, images obtained by OSIRIS, the spacecraft's onboard scientific imaging system, show clear signs of a coma surrounding the comet's nucleus. http://www.nasa.gov/jpl/rosetta/comet-imaging-coma-20140731/index.html |

This comet's density has been given as ~100 kilograms per cubic meter. That's about 11 % of the density of water ice. Even disregarding denser materials, like dust and rock, that are expected to be present, this means that at least 89 percent of this object's volume must be made of essentially empty spaces of some sort. Other comets have been found to have densities of around 600 kg per cubic meter. The European Space Agency certainly chose an unusual object to send Rosetta to. Rosetta will arrive at the comet's nucleus in just two days. |

Here's an unusually intelligent and well written news article on the latest for Rosetta: The Rosetta probe arrives at distant comet In an historic first, Europe's Rosetta probe has commenced a powered orbit around a comet after a 10-year chase. The spacecraft fired its thrusters for six and a half minutes to finally catch up with Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. Mission controllers had to wait an agonising 22 minutes to know that the manoeuvre had worked. One scientist said the journey was the "most complex and exotic trajectory that we have ever seen". "It's fantastic!"... Good to see there are still a few good journalists for science. Good visualization included to get a scale of the thing. A nicely put together piece, for all of the comet, Rosetta and the news piece :-) Here's looking forwards to what will be found on the continued journey around the sun! The comet has a remarkable appearance, so unlike the rounded, 'potato-shaped' comet nuclei seen before. It appears to have two blocky lobes, connected by a thin, almost sinuous 'neck". On the end of the smaller of the two lobes, opposite this connection, there appears to be a large crater, about half the diameter of this lobe. Remarkable that such a low density, and presumably fragile, object should survive such an impact, intact. |

more comet news.. Many thanks to Michael Watson, and ML1! Image of 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko shows the diversity of surface structures on the comet's nucleus. Image Credit: ESA/Rosetta/NAVCAM As Seen by Rosetta: Comet Surface Variations A new image of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko shows the diversity of surface structures on the comet's nucleus. It was taken by the Rosetta spacecraft's OSIRIS narrow-angle camera on August 7, 2014. At the time, the spacecraft was 65 miles (104 kilometers) away from the 2.5-mile-wide (4-kilometer) nucleus. http://www.nasa.gov/jpl/rosetta/comet-surface-variations-20140815/index.html#.U-6tCmMa3z8 |

In the above image, it looks as if a smooth covering of granular material has slid down from parts of the 'head' or smaller lobe of the nucleus, piling up on the 'neck' portion that connects the two lobes. This seems to have exposed a number of linear features. The most obvious of these are vertical and about parallel to one another. There are also horizontal lines crossing these. Emily Lakdawalla of the Planetary Society has likened this area to the appearance of fabric. One wonders how such features developed and were maintained in the very low density ices that are inferred to lie beneath a coating of dust. These look more like features found in solid rock or heavily compacted soils. The lined areas appear as dark, if not darker than the smooth areas, so it its difficult to see how they could be ice. Finding substantial amounts of rocky or soil-like material in this comet nucleus raises some difficult-to-answer questions. Perhaps chief among these is this: How can the nucleus as a whole maintain a density perhaps as low as one tenth that water, if it has a good deal of material 20 or 30 times as dense? |

A perfect example of this statement. The more we learn we find out the less we know. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

In the above image, it looks as if a smooth covering of granular material has slid down from parts of the 'head' or smaller lobe of the nucleus, piling up on the 'neck' portion that connects the two lobes. I question whether somthing with that little gravity would have a functional "down". |

The center of mass of this comet nucleus is on the edge of the larger lobe nearest the neck. If material actually moved as it appears it might have, it moved in the general direction of of this center of mass. Whether the very low gravity present is sufficient to overcome the friction of the material is an open question. We don't know enough about the true composition of this object yet to give an answer. |
