There was a news reporter and cameraman on board the ship that fired the missiles. The crew went from cheering to shock in about a minute. That passenger plane didn't give a thought of flying directly at the US destroyer because he thought we would recognize him as a passenger plane. It's not a good idea to fly over a war zone.

As for Putin having the black box so what, we know why just not who. The black box won't tell who. Putin knew who and why ten minutes after it happened. This could be his end just as the downing of the Korean passenger jet was part of the end of the Soviet Union.

Aircraft was on a filed flight plan
At that altitude the aircraft is in positive control airspace
It was in contact with Air Traffic Control
If flight24 has its track its civilian transponder was working
Ukraine has invited 3rd party investigation

From one of the original reports Russian ATC was expecting it, so the two ATC's were in contact with each other.

One would assume that the defense forces are in contact with ATC, but that may be too much professionalism.

pro-soviet reformation terrorists are allegedly not known to have weapons capable of doing the deed.

Someone has been shooting down only Ukraine military aircraft.

We know the unprofessional[1] Russian military has shot down civilian aircraft before, not bothering to identify them or challenge them.[2][3]

Unfortunately, the US likely had no assets in the vicinity. It will be interesting to see if the Ukraine and Russian governments fork over their radar data and PDQ so they haven't had a chance to "scrub" it.

No conclusion is warranted at this time.

The plane was flying 200 miles north of the usual rout because of storms. This is not unusual but it could have confused the thugs with high tech rockets.

I find it interesting that Putin said the country over whose territory it was shot down is responsible. So is Putin saying that province is part of Ukraine or that the thugs did it?

It appears the rockets were fired by the thugs, not the regular Russian Army, who thought it was a Ukrainian cargo plane.
