Message 1825395 - Posted: 19 Oct 2016, 13:59:18 UTC - in response to Message 1825381.

I'm all for reversing population growth.

I feel that may be the only way to continue on the earth.
There really are no other viable options.

Stop sex? Have Sex Police in every bedroom? Force most women to abort?

There are only two alternatives.

Either Commit Genocide. Or attempt to exist with our future climate.

The world CAN NOT sustain the human population increase that has been witnessed over the last 50 years.
The culture of unlimited family size for religious reasons must be changed.
The acceptance of endless procreation as a cultural norm must be changed.
We have the technology to avail the entire human population to birth control.
We seem not to have the forsight to see the impossibility of continuing down the path of unlimited population vrs. limited resorces.
Either we evolve as human beings that are willing to use our resorces wisely and control and reverse our population growth, or nature will probably do it for us.
Saying that we have no choice but to commit Genocide or live with it is not realistic.
There must be hundreds of ways we can, as a species, make rational choices and prepare a stable future through reversing population growth.
If we don't, the consequences of Genocide by wars over fresh water, cultivatable land and other limited resorces will result.
If we refuse to see that we are on an unsustainable path, the likelyhood of devastating pathogens and mass epidemics destroying us instead increases.

The #1 place to start to solve ALL of the problems faced by humanity depends on a sustainable population, which depends on reversing population growth.
Until there is someplace else to populate this world is all we've got.

I am a small l and large L Libertarian. I deplore dictating how people should live.
To avoid the need for forced, heavy handed interference of governments in our lives we should all be demanding that the religious promotion of the destructive acceptance of unlimited procreation be something that is unacceptable.

No.

It is reducing population. Possibly necessary Pre-Industrial Numbers and Technology.

Or... Humans learn to live and cope with the Climate Destroying results of Post Industrial Populations and Industry.

mmmm Yes.
Correct. That's sort of what I ment. But...
You can't reduce population to a sustainable level without first starting by reversing the growth.

I'm thinking that we have biological/agricultural knowledge and low impact agricultural technology to add quite a bit to that "Pre-Industrial" number and still be sustainable and non-detrimental to the earth.
But world population numbers have got to be lower.
But that's the general Idea.

Hmmm.
I think we have to reduce population in those countries that per capita are responsible to the most GHG emissions.
Per capita GHG emissions in 2005, including land-use change

PS. I'm living in a green area:)

It looks like vast parts of the Sahara and most of Greenland would be great places to live. India looks pretty atractive too. Can't understand why so many from India have been moving here.

Unfortunatly the effects of GW is global and it's doesn't matter where you live.
But we who are living in green areas could always say.
"Not our fault" :)

Then it seems like it is time to change the mindset of all of us.

We are sort of on this journey together, don't you agree?

Time to rethink lifestyles, needs and realistic responsibilities.

Time to stop the hand washing "not my fault" and the hand wringing "it is all their fault" and the finger pointing "we don't manufacture or grow anything so it's all their fault".

Time to ALL take responsibility for overpopulation.
Time to ALL take responsibility for helping our fellow humans to live in a heathy manner.
Time to put the shoulder to the wheel and help push the wagon.
Let's do this thing together.

Strange purple sea creatures found in deep ocean trenches

Another voyage found around 500 new undersea methane vents off the US west coast.

This doubles the number of known seeps, bubbling up a powerful greenhouse gas.

The gas vents were found by an expedition mounted by Dr Robert Ballard, the man who first located the wreck of the Titanic.

Do I hear some sarcasm? :)
I'm talking of distribution of wealth. Not giving people more.
And giving birth to more than 3 children is by far more dangerous to GW then that people have more money.

Janneseti,

Reversing population growth will take 2 generations or more to make any effect.

Uhh... no. We do NOT have that kind of time. 40 YEARS to get to a declining population, followed by ?centuries? to reduce it to what it needs to be??

Now then, I have several times linked a paper that shows the seriousness of the problem, from Dr. Archer.

Here is yet ANOTHER reference to that paper:

Earth's Climate Evolution By C. P. Summerhayes, page 375, bottom of left column.

Will we get over global warming quickly if we stop emissions now, or soon? No.

...

If we stop putting CO2 into the atmosphere tomorrow, 17 to 33% of the fossil fuel carbon will reside in the atmosphere 1kyr from now, decreasing to 10 to 15% at 10kyr, and 7% at 100kyr.

...

A better approximation for the lifetime of fossil fuel CO2 for public discussion might be "300 years, plus 25% that lasts forever."

The actual paper:

https://geosci.uchicago.edu/~archer/reprints/archer.2005.fate_co2.pdf

Further research by Dr. Archer (and Andrey Ganopolski) calculates that it might take 500kyr, thats 500 thousand years... 500,000 years... for the climate to resume its normal course.

http://www.odlt.org/dcd/docs/archer.2005.trigger.pdf

Now then, there is a LOT more to anthropogenic GHG emissions than just CO2 from fossil fuels. I have linked data from IPCC reports listing the various emissions. Do your own research on those.

I have also linked a study on the climate change produced by anthropogenic GHG emissions from agriculture from the start of the Agricultural Revolution to the start of the Industrial Revolution. The gradual rise in just the CO2 from the pre-Agricultural Revolution of 240ppm to the 280ppm figure at the start of the Industrial Revolution produced a warming of perhaps 1.5 degrees C over the approximately 10,000 year time period. Again, do your own research and find that study as well.

We MUST stop all anthropogenic GHG emissions NOW. Just reducing them does not solve the problem, just perhaps delays it slightly. If we fail to do so, well...

To paraphrase Kurt Vonnegut in Cat's Cradle:
Eat, Drink, and be Merry, for tomorrow we Fry.

We NEED to:

1. Stop fossil fuel use.
2. Stop industry.
3. Stop agriculture.
4. Stop other land use.

And stop them NOW.

It may already be too late, but if we don't do an immediate shut-down, we are at GREAT RISK of fresh water melt from the ice caps shutting down the thermohaline circulations in the oceans, drastically curtailing the speed of the MAIN method of removing CO2 from the environment... chemical reaction between the CO2 and minerals in various freshly exposed rocks at the bottom of the ocean.

Perhaps the grand old tradition of Ättestupa, abbreviated ÄTP, should be reintroduced to solve the population growth.

As MajorKong points out, Global Thermonuclear War may not be enough, or soon enough. I think we better get busy in the DNA lab and find a way to evolve us into warm loving CO2 breathing humans.

Of course we could just GM all our staple crops into producing birth control hormones and hope it is enough.
