I have just replaced my main hard drive and done a complete Windows 7 new install. Now that I have reinstalled Seti@home it is running two tasks at the same time with 100% CPU usage, If I suspend one task CPU usage goes back to 50%. If there are other tasks ready to start the a second tasks starts and usage goes back to 1005. I am unable to find any settings that prevent this mode of operation. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

First, this is the way BOINC is designed to work, and for most machines it works fine. The problems would be with some laptops that have overheating problems and some older machines that do not react quickly enough to be responsive. BOINC applications run at the lowest priority above idle that can be managed. This means that if anything else wants CPU time the OS pauses BOINC tasks. That said, if you still want to prevent the usage of one CPU, you can set "Use X% of CPUs" to set this. Any number between 50% and 99% will work in your case as your machines have 2 CPUs. Thank you John, your speedy reply fixed my issue. I was a little concerned that the Windows Task Manager was showing 100% CPU usage all the time. Now it shows 50% which is what I was used to seeing. I have been running Seti@home since year 2000 and never noticed this setting before I have always accepted the defaults. Greatly appreciated Peter (From New Zealand) |
