Don't know if this has already been asked here but can a smartphone also crunch when it's not connected to the main current? In other words, can an android crunch only on its battery?

Yes sure but the battery wont last long probably.

The phone stops crunching once we disconnect it from the main current. Can we change that option in the preferences as well?

Yes sure but the battery wont last long probably.

I set my Galaxy S4 to stop at 20% battery & then let it go from a full charge. It did manage a few hours before pausing crunching at 20% battery level.

Yes, there is an option running on battery either on the phone or here on prefernces page.
I would change it on the phone this overrides other settings.

The computing preferences page also has this little snippit:

Computing preferences

These preferences do not apply to Android devices.

For the Official Android Boinc the computing preferences are only set on the device itself.

For Julie to get her Android device crunching on Batteries, She'd need to go to the Preferences page, then the 'Power sources for computation page' and tick 'Battery'

Ran a test to track more precisely how long my S4 will run on battery while crunching. With 3 tasks running at once I'm down to 60% from a full charge after 01:30:15 of run time. So probably close to 3 hours of run time before hitting 20%. As I was using my phone for some activities while I was at lunch it could be a bit more than 3 hours if left untouched. I'm going to charge the battery back up and try with 2 tasks next.
