It imposes some good habits on users which I suspect will make it unpopular. But it should help cut down on errors.

One tip for notepad++ and xmltools, if you make the app_info opening tag like this:

<app_info xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:noNamespaceSchemaLocation="E:/dev/boinc/app_info_schema/20140203/app_info_20140203.xsd">

where the noNamespaceSchemaLocation points to the xsd on your computer then you can validate just by pressing ctrl-alt-shift-M, which is handy.
