I have a (hopefully) quick question regarding running 2 CPU's to crunch simultaneously on a Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz machine. I've seen other users with similar machines running 2 CPU's to crunch to WU's at the same time. Now I have already figured out to activate 2 Processors in the Preferences of BOINC but this doesn't do the trick. When running Benchmarks in BOINC it lists only one CPU. Since I'm not that computer expert in town I was just wondering if anyone has some feedback. I'm running Win XP Home SP 2 all up to date. Any ideas? Soultrain |

Soul, Few thing to try, you may have already done so... Press [ctrl]+[alt]+[del] Choose task manager. Click the "performance" tab. Under CPU usage history, you should see two side by side graphs. If you do not, then Windows doesn't think 2 CPUs are turned on (yet). The place you change this setting is inside your BIOS, before windows loads, just after computer starts. How you get there depends on who made your computer. With many PCs, you restart your computer, wait for text to appear on the screen and then press the [DEL] key. For others it is the [F2] key (Dell), and for even others it is the [F10] key. You will need to poke around (without making changes) your bios menus yourself, as there are too many varieties to describe here. Basically menus about "CPU settings" or "Hardware settings" might lead you to the right area. P.S.: A Pentium IV speed of 2.80 does not guarantee that it is a Hyperthread capable CPU (2 CPUS). It must have a Front Side Bus speed of 800Mhz and the motherboard must support the HT feature. |

Any ideas? > > Soultrain > Soultrain, All you need to do is go into the PC's BOIS and enable "Hyper-Threading" and this is usually found under the processor properties. If you can no orther files need to bel loaded since Windows XP sets up the rest. After you can check by running the "Task Manager" by "Right-clicking" on the task bar then selecting it. You should see two graphs under "Preformance" if everything is ok. If by chance you dont, select "View" then "CPU History" then "One Graph per CPU" Good luck Ray Doiron |

Thanks for all the info! Lots of help, I'll dig around in the BIOS and see what can be done. Thanks again! Soultrain |

I had to disable this feature as it was maxxing out my cpu usage. Now I have just one WU being crunched at a time and my usages hovers around 50%. Now I can actually use my PC without having to disable Boinc and it can run 24/7 instead of just only in screen saver mode. If the CPU has hyperthreading enables, does the diagnostic automatically set the machine up to crunch 2 WU's at a time?? Just wondering how I got listed as 2 PC's in the first place?? . |
