Just watched Europa Report and it felt like a space version of Blair Witch Project. ~Not a fan.

Yes that movie was bad

I agree :)

NASA plots flight to Europa.

http://www.news.com.au/world/breaking-news/nasa-plots-flight-to-europa/story-e6frfkui-1226845688398

NASA is plotting a robotic mission to Jupiter's watery moon Europa, a place where astronomers speculate there might be some form of life.

The space agency set aside $US15 million in its 2015 budget proposal to start planning some kind of mission to Europa. No details have been decided yet, but NASA chief financial officer Elizabeth Robinson said Tuesday that it would be launched in the mid-2020s.

Cheers.

Might try and get a little nap in before then. Wouldn't want to miss it. :)

But that's just to start planning the mission, not the actual mission itself. ;-)

Jupiter Ganymede update..

Ganymede May Harbor 'Club Sandwich' of Oceans and Ice

The largest moon in our solar system, a companion to Jupiter named Ganymede, might have ice and oceans stacked up in several layers like a club sandwich, according to new NASA-funded research that models the moon's makeup.

Previously, the moon was thought to harbor a thick ocean sandwiched between just two layers of ice, one on top and one on bottom.

A Salty Surprise: Ocean on Saturn's Titan Moon Possibly as Salty as the Dead Sea

Scientists analyzing data from NASA's Cassini mission have evidence that the ocean inside Saturn's largest moon, Titan, might be as salty as the Dead Sea here on Earth.

With Cassini data obtained over the last 10 years, researchers have been able to better understand Titan's outer ice shell, thereby revealing its salty ocean.

The most unusual moon is Hyperion. It a rather large comet looks like a a sponge. It is all ice and very large.

That's nice! A lot of salt means that plenty of chemical elements are available to possible life. Contrary to what the news says, this is good for (alien) life. A pure water ocean will probably be a dead ocean. We must not have a geocentric view.

The Dead Sea harbors only bacteria and algae. If it is in fact water and very salty then this bodes ill for intelligent sea life on Titan. ANYhow I always thought that it was Europa that had the ocean under a layer of ice whereas Titan had only Methane. What's going on here Ladies and Germs ??

From Wikipedia:

Titan is primarily composed of water ice and rocky material.

That's because Earth fishes are adapted to less salty water. There is no physical nor chemical reason that prevents the development of complex life on more salty water. Don't be so geocentric. For example, now most of the life on Earth uses oxygen, but 2-3 billion years ago it was poisonous to all life. Also, solar light was 10% weaker, there was no ozone layer, etc. Don't think that the current environment where Earth life lives in is the only environment where any life can live.

I would challenge those assertions. Do you have any links to confirm them?

Yeah, follow the links from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Oxygenation_Event

About the solar irradiance evolution: this, for example.

Don't think that the current environment where Earth life lives in is the only environment where any life can live.

I would 100% agree with that. But you may have to define life, and whether it might be intelligent.

Well, we don't even have a universally-agreed definition of life or intelligence that applies to Earthlings, but we all can recognize terrestrial life and intelligence when we see them, so I don't think we need a definition of life to search for life in Europe.

Water moons ?

Cassini Spacecraft Reveals 101 Geysers and more on Icy Saturn Moon

Scientists using mission data from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft have identified 101 distinct geysers erupting on Saturn’s icy moon Enceladus. Their analysis suggests it is possible for liquid water to reach from the moon’s underground sea all the way to its surface.
