something to do with a pie?

Yes, you are correct. This item is used in the baking of pies.

Come up with the correct term and specific use for this and the win is yours.

Not a weight. Not for blind baking an empty pie shell.

A pie breather thing - to let the steam out of the base of a pie and so stop the "gravy explosion"

Close enough! We have a winner.

On this side of the pond it is most commonly called a "pie bird" and it is placed in the middle of the top crust of a 2 crust pie to let steam escape. (Cutting a few slits in the pie does the same thing and although I own a pie bird (somewhere....) I have never bothered to use it because slits are easier.

I don't know about "gravy explosions", but if there are no openings in a top crust, it will get soggy from the moisture build up below.

PM going out to our winner now.

Gravy explosions, or fruit volcanoes, are when the steam in the pie filling forces the lid off, sometimes with enough force to "redecorate" the inside of the oven (or stove top if doing a stove top pie....)

My first two guesses are, part of a gas valve from a stove, or a leveling foot for some appliance.

Thanks Rob, I have been fascinated with pressure cookers since I was a kid watching my mum use one.

OK What is this called or what does it do. The bat is hiding the dead-give-away trademark.
