At the current time, I don't think that these are actionable plans. They are quasi-scientific musings that no one could implement now or in the near future. As Arthur C. Clarke believed I too think that no serious means of deflecting or destroying an asteroid or comet will be developed or constructed until after the earth has been struck by one big enough to inflict major damage to the planet. Bob DeWoody My motto: Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow as it may not be required. This no longer applies in light of current events. |

Bob methinks you are most likely correct. |

At the current time, I don't think that these are actionable plans. They are quasi-scientific musings that no one could implement now or in the near future. Maybe, but we here are a good example of that...we cherish our own heritage, but also don't impose it on others...talk here freely, scientifically, without prejudices! Ah but how much of the world community will be left if a big enough one hit? |

I'd say "city wipe-out" scale Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

I'd say "city wipe-out" scale Like the word say it, it's a "city wipe-out" scale! But that kind of damage usually comes to 2/3 of waters, which populated Earth...hitting a city among all waters & land on this World is a miniature scale probability! ;) non-profit org. I'd say, one a little bigger than the one that recently hit Russia but more on target for a large population center, say Paris, New York, London, Tokyo, Hong Kong or Cairo. Just to make a remark, why movie shots don't work in real Life: New York = 1.214 sq km Earth = 510.072.000 sq km Calculate the probability of hitting that small city on a BIG planet! ;) non-profit org. The Rosetta ESA spacecraft is going to crash on its comet, after putting its lander Philae on it, which ended in a position such not to receive much sunshine, so its transmissions ended soon. Philae was recently detected by ESA on the comet. Tullio |

Philae was recently detected by ESA on the comet. Rosetta is set to complete its historic mission in a controlled descent to the surface of its comet on 30 September, with the end of mission confirmation predicted to be within 20 minutes of 11:20 GMT (13:20 CEST). http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Science/Rosetta/How_to_follow_Rosetta_s_grand_finale |

One passes every night. NASA's New 'Intruder Alert' System Spots An Incoming Asteroid A large space rock is going to come fairly close to Earth later tonight. Fortunately, it's not going to hit Earth, something astronomers are sure of thanks in part to a new tool NASA is developing for detecting potentially dangerous asteroids. http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2016/10/30/499751470/nasas-new-intruder-alert-system-spots-an-incoming-asteroid |

Stephen Hawking says asteroids pose ‘major threat’ to humanity Professor Stephen Hawking has issued a terrifying warning about the threat posed by apocalypse asteroids. The physicist said doomsday space rocks are a threat to humanity and any other intelligent civilization that exists in our universe. a video produced by Asteroid Day, a “global movement†dedicated to protecting our species, Hawking said: “One of the major threats to intelligent life in our universe is high probability of an asteroid colliding with inhabited planets.†Enjoy the video. |

Hawking is also afraid of artificial intelligence and of being discovered by hostile aliens. Maybe he is afraid of too many things, People live in New Zealand despite earthquakes, and on the slopes of Vesuvius despite the danger of a catastrophic eruption. We are always in danger. Tullio |

Yes, but some IGNORE it...some live in constant fear, especially if you watch TV news! & some live with a present danger: knowing, doing & enjoying Life... asteroid, named 2015 TC25 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-4004880/Smallest-asteroid-Tiny-6ft-wide-bald-space-rock-spotted-just-79-500-miles-Earth-s-surface.html Smallest asteroid ever found: Tiny 6ft-wide 'bald' space rock is spotted just 79,500 miles from Earth's surface Astronomers have spotted the smallest asteroid ever seen close to Earth. The space rock is just 6ft (two metres) in diameter and is also one of the brightest near-Earth asteroids ever discovered, reflecting around 60 per cent of the sunlight that falls onto it. The asteroid, named 2015 TC25, likely originated from a larger asteroid in the solar system and is one of the fastest asteroids ever discovered, rotating completely every two minutes. |

Scientists can't pin point how far away the Oort Cloud is. http://www.space.com/35008-comet-strike-danger-to-earth.html Sounding the Alarm: Comets Pose Threat to Earth, Too SAN FRANCISCO — If your death-from-above musings focus solely on asteroids, you need to broaden your worried mind. Comets can also deliver a heaping helping of calamity to Earth, and scientists and policymakers alike should start taking measures to combat the threat, said Joseph Nuth, a researcher at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. |

Check out the New Year’s Eve comet to kick off 2017 Ring in 2017 with an out-of-this world celebration. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory said a comet will be flying across the sky just after sunset on Saturday. |
