What makes a task "Completed and Validated"?

A couple of words coming up in my mind is a "checksum" - or possibly a MD5 for such a task which may have been validated (in) this way.

Posting at PrimeGrid some time ago, I received an answer from "John" (Honorary Cruncher/Volunteer Moderator/Project Scientist), http://www.primegrid.com/show_user.php?userid=2449,
that the MD5 (or the like, possibly checksum) had to match among(st) two or more tasks in order to validate a specific PrimeGrid result.

Can anyone give an explanation regarding the validation of tasks (not the numbers this time).

Thanks!
