Message 1331246 - Posted: 25 Jan 2013, 19:27:38 UTC

I decided to upgrade my XP machine imitating a Media Center from XP to Windows 8 Pro. The offer is supposed to end the 31st. I found you can also get a Free upgrade to Windows Media Center right now as well. It has to be better than the ATI Media Center from 2007 I'm using. What about the C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\BOINC Folder in XP? Can I just copy it to another hard-drive and then place it in Windows 8, in the proper location, before installing BOINC? I have set 'no new tasks' but it looks like it will be a couple days before the existing tasks are finished. I've already downloaded the upgrade and I'm ready now...

Thanks, I assume it will work? I didn't know everything will be wiped when 'upgrading' from XP. Apparently, the only thing you can keep from XP is your 'personal items'.

As long as the Boinc Installer matches where the Data directory really is there should be no problem,

I'll probably get started tonight then. So, the Data folder from XP will be just C:\ProgramData\BOINC\ or will it be C:\ProgramData\BOINC\BOINC

On second thought, it looks like it must be C:\ProgramData\BOINC\

Two things i'd do before you finally shutdown Boinc on the XP machine is to Suspend Network activity & Suspend GPU activity (both in the Activity menu),
So when you get Boinc installed on Win 8 you don't trash GPU tasks if you haven't got the Nvidia & ATI drivers installed,

So, It's up and running Windows 8 Pro. Just a few Observations. This is an Upgrade, you will not be able to go from 32 bit XP to 64 bit 8. Unless you jump through some hoops. Goggle 'Window 8 installed 32 bit instead of 64 bit' and you will see all the details. That was the first Observation. Everything appeared to be working fine otherwise, I had video working on three screens. Until I started installing the Video Drivers...

Note, even though the installer says it's downloading 'updates from the web', there are quite a few updates after you finish the installer. One of those updates may correct what happened next because the updates weren't installed when the Full nVidia driver 310.90 killed my system. I installed the ATI driver first, restarted, no problem. I then installed the nVidia Driver, restarted, when the driver loaded my screens, 2 using ATI 1 using nVidia, went black and switched from active to inactive every few seconds. I had to uninstall the 310.90 driver from safe mode. I noticed there were 2 parts labeled 3-D something. When I installed 310.70, I only installed the driver & Update part. That seems to work. I haven't had a chance, or desire, to investigate it any further.

Copying the XP BOINC Data folder to Win 8 worked. I did have one strange 'Permission denied' Error with the first ATI AP, otherwise all is well. Now I'm going to have to investigate all those Shortcuts the Win 8 installer apparently replaced all the unneeded XP folders with. I still have the 'windows.old' folder on the drive...for now.

I've found that for Dual vendor hosts for correct OpenCL operation on AMD/ATI GPUs (at least for Raistmer's AMD/ATI MB apps), you're got to install the AMD/ATI drivers last, as both drivers install OpenCL.dll, otherwise your results are inconclusive/weakily similar.

After I ran the nVidia installer I reran the ATI installer. I did a lot of things I haven't listed. I also removed the ATI card from the machine and still had the same Driver issue with just the nVidia card installed. It consumed HOURS after the screens went Black. I'm just now getting to the point where I want to look at the machine again.

Lookie what I found, Windows 8 Issues SOLVED. PLEASE READ if you're having black screen and/or flickering

I'll see what else pops up on that forum.

Quite a bit of discussion surrounding Windows 8 and nVidia driver 310.9 on that board. In my case, it was a brand new upgrade with only the AMD driver installed. I did remove both the AMD Driver and Card at one point leaving a brand new Windows 8 and 310.9 to themselves. That didn't work either. Some on the nVidia board said the same, new Windows 8 install was killed by 310.9. I haven't rebooted since I got it working yesterday morning, it may not be over.

You might want to avoid 310.9 if you are running Windows 8...

All right, now I'm pissed. Driver 310.9 is Bad News and nVidia has known about it for a while. I downloaded that ....junk Friday night, installed it on a fresh version of Windows, then spent the rest of the night getting the machine to work again.

Read Here, NVIDIA 310.90 Geforce SLI/Multi-GPU Cold Boot GPU issue

There is more going on than just their 'Cold Boot' issue, my machine is not covered in their problem description. Apparently 310.9 was hurriedly released for a Security Issue and is Junk on certain machines. There is an Update due any day now.

Well, nVidia released new Beta Drivers this morning to fix the 'Cold Boot' issue, Beta 313.95. I'm not sure if they also fix the Windows 8 problem or not. It seems they are trying to say they are two different issues, and I think I will sit this one out and see what other people say. No, I'm not Moss312 from the 'Windows 8 won't boot after 310.90 Update' thread although his thoughts have crossed my mind.

Maybe those times I booted Windows 8 into Debugging Mode and sent all the ....junk to M$ Friday night had an affect after all. I have no idea what happens when you boot 8 into Debugging Mode, all I saw was Black Flashing Screens and a flickering HD activity light, when the activity light went out I preformed a hard restart...several times.

Oh, the new Beta has a bug in the installer...not very encouraging. nVidia is having a bad hair month.

Here's the Official nVidia Windows 8 Statement, from page 16 of the PDF;

Known Product Limitations

Flickering Black Screen Occurs After Installing the NVIDIA Drivers on Windows 8

Issue
After installing the NVIDIA drivers on Windows 8, the subsequent reboot results in a black or flickering screen.

Root Cause
This occurs because Windows Update performed a background installation of a Release 304 driver, which requires a reboot to complete the installation. After installing the Release 313 driver and then rebooting the system, installation of both the Release 304 as well as the Release 313 is completed, resulting in conflicting driver binaries and the black/flickering screen.

Workaround - Prevention
To avoid the issue, reboot the system before installing the Release 313 driver.
Alternately, you can check the driver status under the Device Manager and perform the reboot if the Device Manager indicates that a restart is needed. Then install the driver.

Workaround - Recovery
If you did not perform the necessary reboot prior to installing the driver and now encounter the black screen, do the following:
1Reboot in Safe Mode.
2Uninstall the driver.
3Disconnect from the internet and then restart the system.
4In normal mode, install the new driver.

Release 313 Graphics Drivers for Windows - Version 313.95 RN-W31395-01v01 | 16

Except that many people, such as myself, did reboot before installing the nVidia driver. Others merely updated on top of an older driver, yet still have the Black Screen. I suppose I was just lucky that I managed to correctly install 310.70 without disconnecting from the internet. Apparently, according to nVidia, this 'issue' can happen with any version of their driver in Windows 8.

Does anyone know what Microsoft has said about this? I guess I'll have to do some more searching.

OK, the first time there wasn't a problem. I just made some changes and now it's spewing errors. The biggest change was downgrading to 306.97 and creating a new User Account. The NV driver really shouldn't matter. However, I had to uninstall BOINC from the old account and install it in the new account to gain access. I did nothing to the BOINC Data folder. I did reinstall the AMD Driver after I installed the new NV driver. The start-up looks like this;

Sounds as if the slot directories might not have the right permissions, try a Boinc Repair Install (Just rerun the Installer),

At the moment since you're not reported any tasks, is it just OpenCL ATI tasks that Error? or are the Cuda and CPU tasks also erroring?

What does the stderr.txt say for one of those erored tasks?
Copy your client_state.xml to your desktop, open it with Notepad (by editing), then use find to find the result section for one of those errored tasks.

I'm not sure if it's fixed or not. The 1st AP task will be finished in about 30 minutes, we'll see. All I did was add the new Admin user to the data folder permissions. It shouldn't have mattered since it's an Admin account. BOINC just isn't giving that User any respect for some reason. I tried everything to get BOINC to allow that User to control the Client but nothing worked until I uninstalled it from one account and then installed BOINC in the new account. When I finally got it to work, it was just the AP App giving the errors, the other 2 were fine. Strange.

I see that for some reason I lost the 'Professional' from that machine in the computer section. Now it just says Microsoft Windows 8 x86 Edition, (06.02.9200.00). I guess when you install Media Center BOINC removes the Pro part. It's still called Windows 8 Pro with Media Center by M$. I had to call M$ to get Media Center, after 4 days they still hadn't sent an eMail with the Product Key. They say the Key has to be used by today to work. Last Day, is today.

Oh, the person I spoke with, from what ever part of the world that was, didn't know anything about any Black Screens in Windows 8. You can't find much about it by searching either.

Two questions about windows 8

Going to install windows 8 into the 6619276 windows 7 computer. Clean install.

Do you still have to use the protected mode?

Can the nvidia gpu be used?

Great.

Had to use protected mode when I had the preview version of 8 but couldn't do any nvidia tasks. Otherwise; it did fine on windows 8.

Have another ssd drive on the way so will set 'nnt' and swap drives next week.

Thanks
