Message 1293753 - Posted: 11 Oct 2012, 10:20:33 UTC

I have been trying to find the description of SETI's work unit naming convention, but my searches have been unsuccessful. Can anyone help me locate it?

I am looking because I noticed a number of new units I am receiving have unusually long names, as in:

21ap11af.25749.2934.140733193388044.10.40_2

versus a more typical:

09au12ag.28990.14407.13.10.216_0

Alternatively, does anyone know what that new 15 digit number in the fourth position means?

Thanks! :)

There a thread on it here though there's no official answer on it yet.

Cheers.

Thank you for your quick answer!
I hope we get an official explanation soon, and I hope these "longnames" aren't wreaking havoc with the SETI database.

Happy crunching!

Happy crunching!

They are the exact same length as AP names at 42 characters.

That's a very good point. I'm glad you spotted that. I didn't. Thank you!

I was also thinking along the line of, if these names are in error, as was suggested in the thread referenced by Wiggo, then it might cause serious problems later when the SETI staff attempt to identify and work with the returned results. If so, then I hope it turns out to be a non-issue, or at least a minor "ho-hum...". :)

so the .wu on the end of AP WU's is no more?

A WU starting ap_ and ending .wu is an Astropulse WU (line 1)

A WU starting 21ap (line 2) is a setiathome_enhanced (aka 'MB') WU recorded on the 21st. of April...

I've asked before so I'll ask again. Why does the AP wu's need that final .wu?

I would imagine the primary way they sort through work would be by the Workunit ID number.
Like this: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/workunit.php?wuid=1089363385
The name is probably just stored in as a text string in the database. Which unless they defined a smaller limit should accept up to 255 characters. So there should still be over 200 character spaces left to use.
Task/result names get the _# added to them, but I would image those would primarily use their number as well.

EDIT: I think this is what you had originally asked for in your first post, but I keep forgetting to post.

Thank you. You have answered both of my original questions. Now I can understand the format. After all, you can't find your destination without the road map. ;)
I appreciate the input provided by everyone who responded to my query.

I believe all that is left on this thread is for someone to answer skildude's question (Message 1293823) about the ".wu" attached to the end of the AP WUs.

Thanks again!

It would no longer be 42 characters long if they removed it.
