First off, AVG wasn't picking up SETI as a threat. (paid version AVG, fully updated)
However, AVG was causing my machine to bluescreen. I was getting 1-5 bluescreens per day, sometimes attended while active on the machine and sometimes not.
The errors varied. The most common was that there was pagefile activity in a non paged area of the disk, followed by memory management errors.
If you are experiencing oddball bluescreen errors, and run AVG subscription version, try uninstalling AVG in favor of something else for a while and see what happens. I'm pretty sure that AVG is working pretty hard on this because their webpages were "shut down for maintenance" a few days ago which (seems)to tell me that they were getting hammered by angry people and needed a delaying tactic before that had to speak to the public.
Currently using another antivirus program and no crashing. Not gonna name that program, no need to sound like an advertiser.

I switched over to ESET and have had no problems.

That is weird I also use AVG religiously on all my hosts..
I have not been affected by these issues and I run both paid versions of AVG antivirus and avg server edition 2012.
You said you were running a fully updated version does this means you are running avg internet security 2013, or just avg antivirus 2013, or 2012?

Free AVG BSOD my W7 machine, my semiretired XP box has always played nice with AVG.

I used to use AVG, did not have any problems. I have switched to Avast.

I switched over to Linux instead of getting anti-virus silliness when back in the early days of WinXP. The anti-virus idea at that time seemed to be a strange way to do a security fix way back then, and still looks to be a very strange backwards way to run computers still over a decade later...
Since then, continued developments have very much convinced me that "anti-virus" software is simply not the way to do things.

yep, for a solo cruncher linux would be my way to go also...and some servers maybe?...dunno...I aint into that stuff that much tbh...
but not for the main computer running all sorts of apps that simply do not run with linux...
anyway havent noticed any antivirus issues running avg free for years... |

I never had any problem with AVG paid version either, but too much coincidence here for me to ignore. I was running the 2012 version. It might just have been the configuration of my machine that was giving AVG fits. I don't have a strange system, but I don't know how common the particular build I put together might be.
Been a few more days, no more bluescreens at all. I'm pretty confident it was AVG. I seem to recall a new AVG feature for browsing privacy being implemented at the same time that I began seeing problems, but the failures didn't begin on the same day that the new feature was enabled, so if it was the new feature, it was a patch to it, not the original install.
Something of a head-scratching moment, but I think It's fixed. Hopefully this means I'll stop throwing so many errors. Sorry Wingmen! |
