I wonder how much energy is used crunching all that data.

By the time the seti@home project is finished we would have put enough greenhouse gases into the atmosphere to guarantee that once we hear something we will be to screwed down here on earth to do anything about answering.

I sometimes wonder what percentage of a typical spiral galaxy has low enough levels of radiation and a low enough density of stars to allow life (as we know it) to develop

The radiation will always be too high for advanced forms of life until a protective atmosphere, ozone layer and magnetic field develop.

many Scifi books take magnetic field generation into account when they play at space travel. Knowing that someone wrote about it in scifi now we need the science geeks to get our magnetic field generation operational so we can keep the radiation level down near normal.

I do have an idea for the protective layer of Ozone. Fit the space ship with a thin layer between the outer hull and inner hull. Fill this with Ozone. I assume some plastic that won't degrade from ozone contact would be needed and some self sealing containment as well. Or perhaps with all the waste water generated from the current technology for electric generation could be used to as a source for the Ozone generation instead of bringing it up to space with you.

Not anything that even hints to any ET being out there. Not a shred of evidence exists in favor of the idea that there are any lifeforms out there anywhere in space, beyond this planet.

I estimate that they are likely to be 30,000 lightyears away

I suppose in a way we have the unarguable evidence that life and eventaully sentient beings evolved here on earth :),us, and against all odds. Even if so it seems, sentinetn life that could doubt the possibility that the quadrillions of life forms that lead to their own personal existence and gave them the capacity to question the possibility that all other forms or species on this planet are unique in this universe to this planet.

So many events in time , so much persistance, right up to here so how can we doubt in the prospect or lets say hope or wonder that with a little water, fair winds and good weather the same has not occured else where many times in the universe. Carl Sagan held this view point. Little evidence so far,for sure, ofcourse, of others are out there but the odds are there to beat with a fair probaility of succcess in my opinion:) We just need time and resources !

Look at the out reach of homosapiens : 2-3 Million years of evilotion and only in the last 100 year we are capable of sending signals out which may or may not reach intelligent forms capble of reciept for millenia ! Who knows how long the cycle of being a technological society exists. Will we be transmitting in 10, 50 100 years I hope so but given the way we treat our own species and the power we have Im sort of doubtfull, pardon me . Perhapes such windows apply to distant sentient evoluntionary cycles who knows. As I cant think in another way I must suppose they might.

The sky is full of crap, maybe one in 10 billion stars has life supproting planets orbiting them . May be less than 0.0001 % of those have or have had civilisations life in a state capable of signal production.

TAke into account how many systems Seti has looked at in the last few decades, the duration of looking and the number or targets observed is minute, I think we would have been loyttery winners to have found anything by now.

The beauty of maths on this planet is only a few thousands of years old on this planet.. a wonderous thing indeed. Science has crawled its way out of "witch craft" only in the last 300 years, we are like babies succling at the breast of knowldege, so frankley I dont want to here any crap about shreds of evidence or other wise we oprate in the realm of looking for the first data point of evidence ,against all odds.

Frankly your either with the program at Seti or watching the Simpsons and eating pizza in my opinion...ofcourse to do both is just fine and your choice is up to you :)

Of course we will do Seti and continue to play the lottery. After all, lightning does strike
