I've been looking around for a while and the market is over flooded of different alternatives. It has to be a 64bit this time I guess, why buy something less than that, but should it be Dell, HP or should I just buy all the parts needed and assemble it myself, any suggestions?
It must give me good crunching performance!!!!

Problem with Dell is they only sell Intel and for most applications AMDs Athlon (of one type or another) outperforms the P4, often by a significant amount for quite a few $$$ less.

Knocking up a PC is no great effort, however a local reputable shop would be able to build you the same system for less than you could do it for by doing it yourself, and you get the advantage of their warranty on the complete system & not the individual warranties on each item when you do it yourself.

in january the stores have many computers from chrismas sale
and you can save hundreds of dollars,if you good in bussines talk
go with money on your hands in shop and say this is what i will spend and
no more take this few times and the computer store owner will give you your dream box cheaper ! ;-)

I bought AMD64 3200+ a few months ago and I'm very satisfied. Just go up with frequency, som FX53 model or so, with double channel HT (HyperTransport) technology, socket 939/940 (one of then is obsolete already) and 1GB (2x512 - because of double channel HT you need 2 sticks!) CL2 fast memory sticks. That is not so expensive but it has a lot of power.
My personal opinion, don't shoot me please.
And if you are using WinXP Prof. and have 1GB or more memory switch pagefile off (if you are not running a memory expensive applications).

It really depends on what you want to do.

You can get a really nice, fast machine for $1000 or so.

... or you can buy three pretty-fast machines for $300 each.

You can probably go lower (no floppy or CD) if you're just doing SETI.
