and there's nothing we can do ... My poor little HP laptop, \\HP02, is Tango Uniform. She was found powered off this morning ... Efforts to reboot her were not successful. First booted in 2004, HP spent her days as a telecommuter in the IT world. Highly respected by her peers, she would interface daily with mainframes and servers in far flung locations around the globe. HP survived Hard Drive Failure during her career and had a memory upgrade and keyboard replacement as well. Forced into early retirement in 2009 (replaced by a company laptopdog) she spent her time browsing the Web, taking care of personal email accounts, and hosting the local backup drive. She also enjoyed traveling, card games, viewing photos, and could often be found streaming netflix or shopping on Amazon. HP came to Seti late in life and enjoyed the time she spent with her Seti friends, often calling Seti her second career. She crunched 24x7, could frequently be heard communicating with the Seti servers, and usually gave 100% of her free CPU time. \\HP02 was predeceased by her parents \\Paxil and \\Klonopin (both BP6's), and her uncle \\Prozac (a VP6) - all Seti Classic crunchers themselves. She is survived by a sister, \\HP64, three external devices (a monitor, CD, and HD), and also leaves 2 orphaned WU's. Rest in peace old girl. "Dr. Chandra?" "Yes, Hal" "Will I dream?" |

HAHAHA brilliant first post!!! I'll have to do that when my GX60 dies (not that it's crunching as it's 70W for an RAC of 200...). |

Seems that Hal has opened the pod bay doors........ Fine... I'll put my pants back on..... :/ I have an old HP notebook of about that same vintage as well, or more accurately a Compaq 4020US. Which was the exact same at the HP v4000, but $100 less. She, in this case named SAL9000, is spending her remaining days crunching 24/7. The battery went belly up a few years ago so she has to stay plugged in to make her go. Also I've got her overclocked from 1.5GHz to a modest 2.375GHz. She often likes to check out the S@H forum & stat pages. Along with a daily dose of KOL. Ah, another chunk of hardware has fluttered it`s wings and gone to silicon heaven, now resting in the cloud of computing along with GPU,s and hard drive`s all manner of teck that finaly bit it`s last dust bunny and let out `The Smoke` of its last functional milli seconds of life upon this Earth as anything other than a door stop. I wonder how big a pile of dead kit BOINC is responsible for, how many ton`s per year do we kill :¬) |

... I wonder how many systems would have died sooner being turned on and off daily. Maybe someone should buy 40 "identical" systems and run S@H on half of them to find out. :-) Joe |

... In the absense of rigourous statistical analyses like that, I can certainly anecdotally support the argument, in that prior to running Boinc/SaH here I was losing around $300-400 dollars worth of assorted equipment per year (from usually 3 active machines in the house, currently 2), usually at power on. Since late 2006 though, running more or less continuously, haven't lost a single component that way. One $30 power supply did kark it on a now retired machine that doesn't run Boinc, and one 650W seasonic gold power suply failed & was replaced under warranty, though I don't attribute that to Boinc use either. Well, it all depends on whether the kit was designed or built right in the first place. If the cooling was not set up to sustain 100% usage, doing Seti might hasten it's demise. Seeing as how every computer I ever owned was designed and built by myself, the main point of failure has always been the motherboard, when the power supply section could not handle the abuse of insane overclocking. PSUs have come and gone, mostly due to aging components. NEVER lost a CPU, excepting the original Frozen Penny......and that was due to corrosion of the contact lands from condensation in the socket. Never ever burned one up. No matter how hard I tried...LOL. Hard drives are the biggest fan of being powered up continuously. Every single one I have ever had fail did so on bootup. Not when running 24/7. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

With all due respect to the deceased (an ironic and subtle hackneyed phrase), and with respect to Nietzsche himself, perhaps we should more actively seek to hasten the demise of so many of our brethren, who similarly have lived too long a useful life, but are only destined to end it in a depressing decline of high power use and diminishing wu-returns. In a word: e-trash. Euthenasia or "assisted suicide" might be the better end, when so many have so much more productive lives to live and to serve SETI. As they do in Oregon and a few other godless localities, lets invite our aged fellows to end their processes, and permit the young and GPU'd to carry the charge forward without them. Alas, it is the way of the world, why not accelerate it. |

Thanks one and all for your kind words and condolonces - they are appreciated! It's hard to explain the connection I had to this ole girl. I know she's just silicone and printed circuits, but she was also my faithful companion, always ready and eager to work, she helped me earn a living for many years. Her sudden and unexpected demise leaves me sad and I miss her. I must be nuts :-) |

Still there are some that run forever it seems. My mighty Dell gn 233 with 256 Mhz. of vaunted EDO RAM just will not die. It crunches day and night (not SETI very often) and has for years. Just a cleaning now and then and it reboots and goes. They just don't build them like they used to. |

She's alive!!! My little Phoenix, HP02, has risen from the proverbial ashes!!! I was going to tear her down this morning to perform an autopsy and remove salvagable parts, but thought I would try booting her one more time. Pressed the power button and expected to see the HP logo screen, which she wouldn't get past the other day. The logo screen flashed by ... One beep and three passwords later she displayed the Windows desktop. I have her shut down now. I'm going to give her a thorough cleaning and make sure her fans are spinning before putting her back in service, but need to run out and buy some canned air and lottery tickets first. Welcome back, HP02 ... Daddy missed you soooooo much! |
