My MacBook was getting extremely hot with the fans getting louder. how can i just do one job at a time to keep my computer from getting so hot?

In your Computing preferences set:
On multiprocessors, use at most 25% of the processors
Enforced by version 6.1+

If you ever used your local preferences, you'll have to make the changes there, because the local preferences override the online ones.
