Timber! Don't mean a thing to me......... I just did a stint on Einstein, not because I wanted to, but because I needed to keep the house warm. Seti creds are Seti creds. And the kitties hold them above all others. Meow. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Many years ago, I was together with my parents a little bit outside of town with my 2.4 inch Polarex Unitron refractor (which was of very good quality, but really should rather have been a 3-inch). Oh, those money. Anyway, I was able to locate the Crab Nebula (M1) in Taurus that evening. Something to remember for the rest of your (my) life. It is in fact a 950 year old supernova remnant and its central core is a neutron star which rotates around its own axis 30 times a second. |

I think I'm going to crunch Einstein for a while until the project supplies enough work... This is where my heart is too, but the BOINC client (in my experience at least) still can't reliably schedule work (for example, it keeps asking for CPU work when when the GPU has been sitting idle for a day and there's nothing but CPU work, then I run into the "This computer has reached a limit on tasks in progress" when I have a tenth of the work units I had only a few days ago, then it's "Last request too recent" when no work was even requested the last time.) Tired of having to micromanage sitting there clicking Retry because all the uploads and downloads will sit for hours if three time out (which they do constantly) and then I'll run out of work while it waits because when it finally retries all the work is gone. (Also Einstein has made a few actual discoveries. With a pool of over two billion completed work units, when's NITPickr going to become a priority?) Probably come back when the Green Bank work starts up. I hope things are a little more reliable then. |

Thanks.......... On the contrary: I welcome new participants to the project and I value their contributions. To whatever extent we can it is appropriate that we help them get as addicted to SETI as some of us have over the years. If they post about their project concerns then we should not devalue their concerns, we should share factual information (to the limited extent that it is available)and do what we can to help them thru the rough spots. While the SETI of today is not the project I joined many years ago, and while I am not satisfied with how it is currently running, I have not walked away. Such is the nature of an addiction. It's not too many computers, it's a lack of circuit breakers for this room. But we can fix it :) |

if you don't like waiting for Seti work units...or the general outage, BOINC has other projects that may interest you. this project is about science. if you need credit to be satisfied, go to Primegrid. it is a credit rich environment. Mark is the most loyal Seti user i know of. i know he gets frustrated from time to time, but i don't think he has given up or will. if you can't understand the limitations of a underfunded science project, maybe you should "piss off". |

Heck! I am starting to get a little bored by doing this stuff. First of all, I only get those small pulses in my current tasks and maybe a couple of triplets in between, none of them very strong. Next comes the display of the graphics preferences (skin or the like). Currently set up here using "Minimalist". Apparently the one which is suiting me the best. But I really liked the graphics display in the old Seti@home 3.08 better than what I have been able to see for the BOINC Manager, even though the relevant numbers for the task being run is still there, of course. Should I be able to interpret the lower part graphics (the horizontal bars) in any particular way, or is this part of the graphics always the "same"? |

Done deal. This is NOT all about what we can do for the project. Not what it can do for us. I am done trying to explain for the the naysayers why they cannot do this or that. It is just this........... Do what you can. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

I have possibly mentioned this before. But, it may perhaps be a little hard to think or believe that no-one or someone could possibly beat us (the human race) when it comes to both intelligence as well as communication. Are not we supposed to be the best in the end when it comes to these things? Is life (or the definition of life) something different or more than just possible intelligence and/or communication? Meaning "extraterrestrial" here. Well, some 27 or 28 years ago I was doing an intelligence test on the local military recruitment office before arriving at the three month "recruit school" (the place they were supposed to teach me how to use the rifle for self defence). Anyway, that intelligence (or IQ) test (a written exam) was really smartly created and well thought out stuff and not even the best people doing those tests could possibly hope for 100 % total success. After finishing up those three hard months (including a couple of trips back home by means of a 6 hours train journey lasting some 6 hours or so (each way) giving me 2-3 hours of sleep when arriving back at the camp in the early monday morning), I had nine months watching teletypers. Those Siemens teletypewriters or teleprinters manufactured in the 1930's were capable of a speed of 50 baud (or bits per second, I may guess). The newer code machines from the 80's became so hot on the top that you could boil or cook eggs if you put something on that place. The stuff passing by really became non-interesting, almost boring, even though I read some of the stuff at times. |

This IS intended to be the best that can be in terms of Boinc. The first and the best. Unfortunately, not the best funded. You can help that. What is ultimately the best Boinc project on the net has fallen on hard times.......mostly due to it's innate success. Everybody wants to find the aliens.......not everybody realizes that there are some terrestial costs in the attempt in doing so. There are........please be so kind as to try to offset those costs somewhat by donating to the project as well as plugging in your computer. The GPUUG fundraising thread will help to keep you informed of the progress. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Everybody wants to find the aliens.......not everybody realizes that there are some terrestial costs in the attempt in doing so. That reminds me of the old song "Everybody wants to get to Heaven, but nobody wants to die." |

Speaking of "conclusive evidence" - what is then needed? Is the subject of finding an extraterrestrial signal proving that we are not alone in the Universe the process of eliminating numbers that are thought to be "in error" from those numbers which are thought to be "valid" (in nature)? Are you perhaps looking for (wishing / having a desire) for that high number which might be that special gaussian score? Would such a number be thought of as being a valid number? If a result contains some information other than a specific gaussian score, in whatever way else can you be able to deduce intelligence by means of some kind of communication? Is a gaussian score an indication of possible life or maybe communication of sorts? Are angels perhaps singing in the sky and we are perhaps on the threshold of detecting this singing? Have a look in your logs, Mr. Sattler. Please tell me if you think you have already found something. Thanks! |

Everybody wants to find the aliens.......not everybody realizes that there are some terrestial costs in the attempt in doing so. LOL.....reminds me of one of my favorite momememts in 'Pay it forward'.....And I am sorry folks, but this gives me goosebumps every time I make the keen observation. You have to do something for somebody else, but it has to be something big.......something they cannot do for themselves.......... A lot of people bitch about the way the project is working, but too few have contributed to the possible solution. If you have not been part of the solution, you are simply part of the problem. I'm just gonna open the door........OK? Ya see, I'm not allowed to do it for Trevor. Or you. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

Perhaps we should rather look for and find ourselves? You know, great people in here, nice people as well, great project, but unfortunately hampered by anonymous people constantly spreading lies around. I guess this includes me as well. Bah! So therefore it seem to me to perhaps some of us may be speaking with one voice whether it comes towards both the positive as well as the negative. Because the numbers possibly being obtained never seem to be satisfactorily, who should then be trusted in such a situation? Perhaps the one or ones who are having the the most credit on the project? |

Perhaps we should rather look for and find ourselves? It's not just about the numbers, my friend...... They portray what conviction a contributor has for this project, but they certainly do not convey everything about them. My numbers are lower than some, but higher than many. They don't tell you about the endless hours I have spent behind the screen poking virtual buttons. Just to get one or two more WUs to crunch and send back to the project. Yup.....that's me. Down to Earth question. Poor Galileo Galilei. He discovered the four moons of Jupiter back in 1610. You are not supposed to believe in me. Anyway, msattler got it so much better. Those 0.83 score pulses are SO exciting to me. Again I am supposed to take some things and matters out of the context where they really do belong. You are not thought to believe in space numbers are you? They do not matter when it comes to our Christmas shopping (looking for the necessary coins in my pocket). Should I be looking for something else? When do the numbers become "invalid"? Of course, you can not deduce neither intelligence nor communication from the following because Seti@home never is supposed to have found anything. If the pulses in some way are thought of as being "valid", what about the rest of the part of the result line they are part of. Is some or most of it "invalid" in any way? At what stage or what kind of number does it all become or runs into the invalid? Read the final line at the bottom as well. Well, bud, you got a lot of us puzzled. I suspect you are a good soul in a troubled body. And, like myself, sometimes speak in tongues that others do not always understand. I find it hard to express exactly what I am thinking sometimes. Perhaps it is so with you as well. Hope you are well, my friend. "Freedom is just Chaos, with better lighting." Alan Dean Foster |

What is your contribution to this project, Mr. Sattler? Your high credit, my friend? Not even a moderator can change the numbers which supposedly is purporting to ridicule or throw a project off its heels. Who is the most stupid or intelligent in here, msattler, chris, or perhaps poor little me. The old way of thinking: power > 3.2, fit < 10, the rest of it just "straightforward". And what about the presumably missing score? |
