No methane on Mars!! Perhaps that's because the planet has been dead for longer
than one hoped for.

The Curiosity rover's failure to detect methane on Mars is a blow to theories that the planet may still host some types of life, say mission scientists.

NASA Curiosity Rover Detects No Methane on Mars

PASADENA, Calif. -- Data from NASA's Curiosity rover has revealed the Martian environment lacks methane. This is a surprise to researchers because previous data reported by U.S. and international scientists indicated positive detections.

Thanks Nick!

The jury's still out. Dissipation of methane, at its possible sources,
could account for Curiosity's not detecting it. Also, methane production
could be sporadic.

Water on Mars: Curiosity rover uncovers a flood of evidence

Water, water everywhere, and some of it fit to drink.

That's the picture of ancient Mars that has emerged during the past few months thanks to discoveries by NASA's Curiosity rover, which has been exploring the Red Planet since touching down inside Gale Crater in August 2012.

I thought I had read that one of the orbital probes had detected methane at certain times of the Martian year over isolated locations.

All this is good data if and when some earth government decides to mount a manned to the red planet. I still don't think such a mission will be launched until the radiation hazards are solved in an economical manner.

So are we the Martians or were there never any in the first place?

I think we'd already know by now if we would really have originated from Mars. I don't think there was ever any intelligent life there...

Life on Mars may never have developed to the point of producing intelligent beings but our first ancestors may have originated on Mars and rode on a rock to earth starting things here. Maybe not as likely as life spontaneously starting here on earth but still among the possibilities.

Earth eventually had the means for intelligent life because of its position in the habitable zone. I do believe the basic elements for life were there, on Mars, too long time ago, also when you consider Earth and Mars were once one at the birth of our solar system.

Curiosity's SAM Instrument Finds Water and More in Surface Sample

The first scoop of soil analyzed by the analytical suite in the belly of NASA's Curiosity rover reveals that fine materials on the surface of the planet contain several percent water by weight. The results were published today in Science as one article in a five-paper special section on the Curiosity mission.

Curiosity Update:

NASA’s Curiosity rover has proven some of the meteorites discovered have indeed come from the Red Planet, according to a new study published by the American Geophysical Union.

Ok I accept the findings, but how did a meteorite lift off from Mars and land on earth in the first place? And presumably if we have got some, so have other planets and moons?

Probably we got the debris from an impact on Mars.
