(ie the US as the US is the whole world, isn't it?). Chris, we'll cut you some slack on this one. Mercifully, American Presidents are limited to no more than two four-year terms. No Margaret Thatchers or Tony Blairs for us. Unfortunately, no term limits apply to Members of Congress, so every ten years the legislatures of each state spend months mangling voting districts to insure that each incumbent congressional or legislative candidate has either a cake walk or impossible task being re-elected. As a case in point, I have a very good and effective 10-year state representative in our legislature. However, she is now in the minority. Rather than taking her on in a fair fight, the legislative district map was simply redrawn so her district no longer exists. It will be partitioned among 3 existing districts, which have been designed specifically to insure that she cannot win. Speaking of the Presidency. The Republican's best hope ended when Christie said he would not run. He had not been in office long enough to be tainted by pandering to the extreme religious right and the independent moderates were seriously giving him a look. Now all that's left is Romney, who can't decide what day it is; Perry, who is G.W. Bush with even worse grades; Cain, who is running on a tax plan that is ridiculous; and Bachmann, who is ... well... nuts. As a result, whenever there is a new front-runner, they can't stand up to scrutiny or the Tea Party Radical Conservative Purity Test. This is why neither Paul nor Huntsman can get any traction. It will be interesting to see how many people actually vote in 2012. I predict that a great many on both sides will simply choose to stay home. Join the PACK! |
