I read that the SETI Institute might map out space debris for the US Air Force in exchange for funding, and that got me wondering. What are some of the other things that SETI and SETI@home do in addition to looking for ET? |

I read that the SETI Institute might map out space debris for the US Air Force in exchange for funding, and that got me wondering. What are some of the other things that SETI and SETI@home do in addition to looking for ET? The SETI Institute and SETI@home have nothing in common outside the name. For the first, go to www.setiquest.org and see what they are doing. SETI@home is a BOINC project using data from the Arecibo and Green Bank radiotelescopes which are used for astronomical research by academic institutions. The Arecibo data are used also by Einstein@home looking for binary radio pulsars, alongside with data from the Parkes radiotelescope in Australia. They found 2 of them in the Arecibo data and 6 of them in Parkes data, so far, but the search is going on. I always felt that we should try to combine our efforts in SETI rather that fragment our resources. Two SETI groups at Berkeley just messes up my mind. |

I agree with you but I am not a Regent of Berkeley U., only a (past) user of Berkeley Software Distribution 4.2 (UNIX). Tullio |
