Eric and I had the pleasure of visiting your lovely country in 2002. We spent a large part of that trip on Hamilton Island right off your Great Barrier Reef. It was a wonderful trip!!! Funny thing though... there were signs up everywhere not to feed the birds, but your darn cockatoos pretty much helped themselves to food. I watched one snatch a piece of pizza right off of somebody's plate in an outdoor restaurant. I saw another cockatoo fly in, snag a bag of potato chips from a pool-side bar, fly a short distance away where he/she independently ripped open the sealed bag and devoured the contents. At one point Eric and I had a bowl of cashew nuts sitting on a window ledge. Cockatoos noticed this and lined up, trying to break through the window to get the nuts. We moved the bowl, but I am convinced that given enough time, those darn birds would have found a way to get through the window. I'll try to find an old picture of that, if I can. I vaguely remember Eric snapping a photo of that feathery scene. Anyway, lovely country but watch out for those birds - they are way too smart!!! |
