Gee, Rupert Murdocks News gatherers doing something unsavory? Say it ain't so. One has to wonder if these jackals are working this alone or is it a corporate decision. If it is a corporate decision, are his other news outlets doing it as well? In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

I'd think that any paper that got caught doing that should be taken off the rack and not permitted to sell in that country. Then you can go after the owners, editors and the individuals that did the tampering In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

Damn censor pig. Just arrest the guilty and jail them for the crime. Don't make censoring legal! |

and we know that no other Murdock rag does this type of activity. Can it be investigated? This wasn't their first dip into these waters. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

Damn censor pig. Just arrest the guilty and jail them for the crime. Don't make censoring legal! I could be missing something, though I don't see any references to censorship in the articles linked nor in the thread (except the above). I'm not sure where censorship arises in the the phone hacking debacle, unless it's self-censorship by News of the World and/or News International in a bid to retain advertisers. If the subject were to become pertinent, I think the horse has already bolted on that one in the UK, "super-injunction" anyone? DA-Notice? "But should advertisers use their financial muscle to try to influence the behaviour of the media? It is not usually regarded as a good thing for big business to threaten newspapers and broadcasters, particularly over editorial issues." If this were an issue of editorial I'd agree. The issue here is the length the NotW would go to when collecting information for news stories (e.g. hacking the phones of family members of 7/7 victims). If a US news organization were found to have hacked the cell phones of the families of 9/11 victims I suspect that it would have no advertisers today (well, aside from the odd twoofer). I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ... |

Illegal activity is illegal activity its got nothing to do with censoring. When an organization is party to the crime it should pay the only price available, removal from circulation In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

Laying aside the arguments about censorship there are legal and moral lines that are alleged to have been crossed by the NoW. Is it morally right to tap the phones of those that have been bereaved? Is it legal to tap ANY phone without the appropriate authority? While some may see a "moral" argument for tapping a celebrity's phone there can be no moral justification for tapping the phone of one who has lost a loved one in violent circumstances. I can see no moral justification for tapping the victim's phone on the off-chance that a paper may gain some "nice tittle-tattle" about the victim or their family. But without the appropriate legal authority then any phone tapping (in the UK) is an illegal act, and so the NoW, if proven guilty should face the appropriate legal punishment. Let us see what comes out of the various investigations that are being carried out, which may, or may not, lead to prosecution if there is evidence that a crime has been committed. Damn censor pig. Just arrest the guilty and jail them for the crime. Don't make censoring legal! Apologies, brain not fully engaged. Though I suspect that sales will take a hit without the need for state intervention. The weekday sister paper of the Sunday only News of the World, The Sun, has suffered massive circulation issues in Liverpool after a disaster at a soccer match, when it published a front page article stating that the Liverpudlians had behaved despicably. It's not inconceivable that the current controversy will have a similar effect, though on a wider basis. I think you'll find it's a bit more complicated than that ... |

Tapping is what the press is calling this to sensationalize it. What it is likely is the default PIN number to the voice mail was never changed. Don't know over there if that is 0000 or the last 4 digits of the phone number. I doubt they find that the PI has a person inside the phone company who read out the PIN number, if they can even do that. I also doubt the PI tried 0000, 0001, 0002 ... In California the PI would be guilty of Penal Code 502, unauthorized access and could do Felony time. Anyone who conspired with him also guilty. Should be a simple slam dunk with the phone company logs. |

If the Brits are half as good as we are at finding evidence and if their laws are at least similar then they have multiple cases of illegal activity. Lets also note that there appears to be a bit of a problem with the police getting paid to look the other way. In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

you have to wonder how often the editor was on vacation. Claims that she was out when the initial reports came in now make her seem like a huge liar In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

Since this phone hacking issue first came to light, the police have been questioning a lot of people with several being arrested, with 2 jailed to date.... As far as I'm concerned, the BIGGER question is this: - Who will be questioning the police as it's now been stated that payments were made with some up to £30,000 ($48,000)? ....or will that charming "Olde English Tie" come into effect & cover their butts...... |

So, Rupert and Mini-Rupert finally ran into a buzz saw. Good. They were already paying off the police in the UK. It's going to be tough to investigate how far this really goes. I hear the grand coalition PM is a chum of Rupert's. The word in the colonies is that Mr. Cameron has a bit of trouble focusing and may need his eyes examined.... Join the PACK! |

It's so easy for a pot to call a kettle black. "It is totally naive for any MP or Prime Minister to be in a parliament riddled with MPs who cheat on their expenses and fraudulently take money from the tax payer, and not know intimately what went on" (quoted the pot) Cameron the Prime Minister could not in hindsight have known what Coulson had been up to. Cameron has done nothing wrong - it is those who carried out the inhuman hacking that have done wrong. flaming balloons |
