I don’t know what it’s like in “Snow Leopard”, but in “Tiger” and earlier you would open the Desktop & Screen Saver panel of System Preferences, then choose BOINCSaver from the list in the Screen Saver pane. Since the graphics can slow processing a little, I set the Options to go to a blank screen after a minute or two: this gives me a chance to watch the display for a bit but lets the system concentrate on crunching most of the time.
